okay all you crazy Geocachers out there, as we sit here now, it is barely breaking the Zero Degree mark with -20 to-30 degree wind chills.  The question for you all is just this:  HOW COLD IS TOO COLD TO GEOCACHE?

For Some today would have been prime caching weather: (scroll down and read from bottom to top as you would on GC.com

For Immediate Realease…The WWF today confirmed the existance of a new species of carnivore. Earlier this week, the WWF issued a call for volunteers to catch and release a new, but undocumented species of mini-raccoon suspected to be living along the banks of the Fox River.

“We are very pleased with the response” said WWF ecologist, Stephan Wulffscaat, “any sensible person wouldn’t be out in these -25°F pre-dawn conditions, but this particular kind of naturalist will!”

Wulffscatt is happy that the naturalists in Appleton had responded so quickly, saying “I just knew it wouldn’t take them long to respond to our call, in fact I know that some of them are just a little bit manic and borderline insane when it comes to this outdoorsy stuff.”

The species was discovered in the pre-dawn hours of February 4th in sub-zero temperatures by a local naturalist. In honor of the find, the WWF will be submitting the scientific name of “sagasuius crepusculus” after the individal who found the animal and the nature of his twilight discovery.

“We still need to document the creatures whereabouts and still need volunteer help to do so.” Wulffscatt added. The WWF will compile all of the findings at the end of the year and submit thier report for the approvel of the new species.

The WWF also advised future catch and release volunteers to be aware that the animal may move about in its active home range of .05 miles and may not be caught in the same spot as was initially .

NEWS UPDATE:In predawn hours, within the city limits of Appleton, WI, this independent naturalist succeeded in capturing a previously undiscovered mammalian carnivore referred to as a “raboon” in earlier reports. The capture was documented at the site of discovery.

The raboon had apparently just returned from a long night of foraging and was either sleepy or mimicking death like a possum as it did not struggle when captured. Earlier reports of the creature’s size and appearance were confirmed. In compliance with Wisconsin regulations on new or endangered species, the raboon, which may be assigned the scientific designation of “seldom seenius” pending further research, was immediately released at the site of capture. TFTH seldom|seen!

Has the WWF yet been able to determine if the raboon is migratory? Unable to confirm presence of this new species in Appleton early Sunday morning. Numerous potential raboon holes were inspected with no success until GPS and flashlight batteries were nearly dead. Strangely enough they recovered upon return to home base. Perhaps this was an environmental phenomenon. Further field research will be necessary.

Fun stuff, labrat.  Those are some of the folks that made life on these message boards interesting. Wish they’d come back out and play.

In response to your question….while we were out hiking in Peninsula in nasty weather like this a couple weeks back, we have noticed that with 8 to 9 years’ aging since we started, going out when it’s like this isn’t so fun anymore.  We’d made plans with some friends for some caching fun today, but postponed them for a week.  We’re all old and retired and coming from the same place, I think.  I was out xc skiing at around 5 degrees, but no wind.  I’ve had severe facial frostbite (skin actually froze solid and white) and have no desire to do that again.

He has since reported back that they found 2 caches and then ran back to the van.  He treated them to a hot chocolate from Kwik Trip for being so hardy.

Geocaching is a recreational activity for us.  If it is not enjoyable, we don’t do it.  It is not enjoyable to be out in super sub-zero temperatures, so we don’t go out in this.  Those of us who have been around a while know how much fun seldom|seen and Sagasu were having all those years ago, so it was perfectly normal for them to be out in the cold… or the wee hours of the morning… or whenever.  Different strokes for different folks.  (I had forgotten all about the raboons!)

No, please don’t. It’s possible to stay warm vicariously.

Crazy? Yes, I was hoping that school would be cancelled today due to the extreme cold … so that I could go out caching.

As someone else mentioned above, I geocache because I find it fun. This weather, not so much. I was out when it was around 34 degrees, and that was probably my limit.

Maybe I lied a little.  I have a chance to see a fairly cool bird that I must have missed when skiing in nicer weather (or maybe it wasn’t there when I was).  I’ll be bundling up in a bit and heading there…not a cache, and not even a life bird.  Birding friends said it was there yesterday.  Why didn’t they call?

I have no problem going out today in my gear, but since 2 lil hippies are home sick I won’t. If mom had the boys though, off I go 😉

It wasn’t too cold for this group on Saturday with 40 mph wind gusts up at the Chippewa Moraine. GC5FZKD

I was just out running a few errands and putzing around the place outside, and it wasn’t too bad out.  Of course, I was all bundled up and came in a few times.  I would not have gone caching in this cold unless it was a bunch of drive-up P&Gs.  The suns helps it feel warmer, but we’ll wait to do those longer hikes when the thermometer agrees.
