My father and I went out to a local ski hill a couple weeks ago. Being that he is the one who got me into Geocaching in the first place, it was a main topic of discussion. Some how in the midst of it all, we ended up skiing over to a cache on top of the hill. I never thought that one day I would be down hill skiing and caching at the same time.

Is there any other odd hobbies that you guys have combined with caching?
So far, I have combined Kayaking, Photography and Motorcycling with caching.

there are several hobbies that go hand in hand with geocaching:
    bicycling
    hiking
    diving
    snowshoeing
    xcountry skiing
    as mentioned: photography, kayaking, motorcycling
    canoeing
    swimming
    bird watching
    mushrooming

the list can go on and on. Please add others as you see fit.
thanks Graphicsgirl19 for hopping in and starting a few topics. I can see that you enjoy caching as well as other outdoorsy things.
BTW: you mention your father getting you started. what is his geocaching name?

It was ctrbrink. but he hasn’t used it for a long time when I was younger. Usually he just comes with me when I do it. He is thinking about starting it up again though and making a new account and coming to some events with me.

With the exception of diving and motorcycling, all of the ones mentioned have combined with caching for us at some point or other. Birding is a given at any cache hunt for me! Cache creation allows even more crossover.   I’ve seen some really creative caches that were created by people who are electronics junkies, for instance.  Others that are puzzle caches allow tons of crossover.

Technical climbing is one other thing that’s been combined with caching.

I thought of another….wine tasting.  We’ve planned quite a few caching trips based on nearby small wineries offering tastings. We’ll go do the tasting, then get a few caches nearby before heading back home.  We’ve also attended a homebrew festival the past two years with friends, planning some caching afterward to allow us to “dry out” before the drive home.  We stumbled on the brewfast two years ago at a caching event.  The weather was rainy and miserable and some of us didn’t feel like caching in that stuff, so we wandered over to the fest.  Finding these fun little side discoveries is what we really love about caching, and I realize they actually have little to do with finding caches.

We’ve done the same with small music festivals and small performance venues.  Go to the event, then find something on the way there or back.

Hunting and fishing. All though geocaching definitely takes a back seat and I would normally not go out of my way for one but I cannot pass it up if I am hunting and fishing very close. Very Close. Unless I am with the group; then there is no time for them to let me grab a cache. Spent 9 days last year up in Dryden Canada hunting. There was a cache 386 feet behind the hotel and I never made it back to the hotel during daylight hours. We are pretty serious. Finally before we were leaving on the last day I was going to try for one but it was out on a rock out crop over a river. Armed with only a pen slopping through the mud while it was raining, at about 100 feet away, I thought it is way to slippery to climb out there and I am way to far from anywhere and don’t feel like getting hurt or dying here and never did grab a cache. Working…?  8-O ;)  Well, I guess that doesn’t qualify as an odd hobby.

Depends on who you talk to. Some photographers, their work is their hobby. I think that is true in any case of someone who truly loves their job. Its not work to them. Regardless, I have been known to grab a cache if the job I am working on is in the vicinity of one. 😀

We have combined snorkeling and caching, but mostly on our trip to Hawaii.

    Also, rock climbing and caching.

    Geocaching goes with almost everything!!

    Not according to my wife.
Not that I would consider this a hobby, but dental visits are turning into caching trips now. I even have a saved list on my phone app of caches near my dentist.

I once stumbled upon a cache inadvertantly in the middle of a marathon training run.  I went off trail a bit to find a place to do some toilet business and wound up with one of Zuma’s challenge caches less than 4 feet from my face.  I signed the log but it’s been two years since and I still haven’t qualified for it though I hope to one day.  It’s for 10 letterbox finds so it shouldn’t be too excruciating.

I suppose running isn’t really that odd of a hobby though.  If you want to talk odd: Competitive Powerlifting.  Yes, that’s odd for a 42 year old female.  I was in Barron for a meet the day my profile picture was taken.  I had an hour and a half to kill in between the weigh-in and the rules meeting so I went for a walk and made a find as the sun was rising.

Oh, and beekeeping.  To be honest I have yet to cache during official bee business but I plan to score at least a park and grab when I head up to Clear Lake to pick up my nucs this spring….I don’t have the county or the DeLorme page yet so I absolutely wouldn’t miss it.

My other internet based hobby has been considered odd.  Have you seen a Where’s George dollar?  Yep, that’s my other hobby.  I went to Saint Louis a year and a half ago for a Where’s George gathering and ended up caching with about half a dozen other Georgers who also are cachers.  I’ve even been able to sneak a few of my Where’s George dollars into caching events as well.
