Wondering if anyone else has seen Geocaching HQ Admin archiving caches in their area?
The 2 I have seen were:
1) the edge of a rural park but looked well within the boundary of the google maps. If outside of it, it would have been in a field.
2) a Stop sign GC3FQ67 on the public right of way.By the way, I am fine with the archiving of caches that are in the “terrace” or right of way especially if the land owners do not like it there. It does seem to be the polite and correct thing to do. Public safety and the potential blocking of traffic does seem worth a film canister but the cache in the park was a surprise.
Assuming these were archived after the contact came directly to GC HQ.

07/28/2015 at 4:30 pm #2041707I do not know any of the backstory behind either of these caches, nor have I seen any GC Admin archived caches in our area. I don’t recall ever seeing the protocol on the chain of command for archiving caches, but maybe those who wanted these archived don’t have GC memberships, and they decided to contact Geocaching directly, not knowing any other way. As a cacher, if I ran into this situation, I would put a Needs Archived log on the cache and the reason why (neighbors don’t want this here, on private property or perceived private property, dangerous location… whatever). That way both the CO and the reviewers get to see what is going on and can keep the solution local instead of GC HQ handling the situation from afar. (Was there any private notification to the COs on these?)
07/28/2015 at 6:54 pm #2041708I just saw this recently as well, but can’t for the life of me remember where it was or which cache it was. I assumed that someone had contacted HQ, as whichever cache it was, didn’t seem to have recent issues stated in the public logs.
07/28/2015 at 7:38 pm #2041712I had one of ours archived by HQ. It was on public property, but the item to see here was private property. I don’t know if cachers were going on the private property or not. The landowners contacted HQ for some reason and that led to the archiving. HQ did explain everything to me and I was fine with it. I think they do the quick archive when there is a problem to avoid having to track if the CO is taking care of it. Considering that there are now almost 3 million hides in the world it’s nice to know that HQ still cares enough to make sure we are well presented in the world. The way things are today we are fortunate to still be able to play this game we love.
07/28/2015 at 10:13 pm #2041716My hide has been there in the Stop sign since April 1, 2012 and found 116 times.
It was achieved today by HQ, then they sent me an e-mail explaining a person living in the nearby house contacted them and said she was freaked out by someone looking in a tree on her property. She said she has not been able to sleep.
I’m fine with the achieving to keep piece with muggles even though it is clearly not on private property. I just hope this doesn’t happen too many more times or a good percentage of caches in the whole USA will be gone as there is a good percentage of them on signs or guard rails.
Hope to see you on the trail,
Joe
07/28/2015 at 10:26 pm #2041717Thanks for the insight, Joe. At least HQ let you know why they archived it.
07/29/2015 at 5:01 am #2041724Thanks Joe. Glad it was something like that.

07/29/2015 at 10:42 am #2041730None of mine have been archived but when researching caches to do in CO I thought about doing that huge geo-art that was the CO seal. It was so cool! All of the caches were placed legally and all the right people were contacted but locals were complaining and making death threats so HQ shut it down. Check it out:

07/29/2015 at 11:05 am #2041733The mentality of some locals out here isn’t too far from that expressed in CO. Very much an area where you stand your ground and are extremely wary of anyone coming onto their property, even if that property is public land (and there is a ton of that out here).
I’ve also had some really great experiences, and the local businesses (all five of them) really have welcomed me placing caches in the area because they have noticed people from out of town stopping to shop, even one guy from Germany!

07/30/2015 at 10:17 pm #2041767The one I remember being archived by a lackey was called 9 Feet Above Wet: GC24JHB Yup, private property issues there as well.

07/31/2015 at 11:38 am #2041780That was a funny one. 2 months after Archive and note saying container was gone, someone logged it.

07/31/2015 at 6:20 pm #2041786That goes to show that the reviewers and lackeys really can’t verify whether or not the cache is truly there. I just wonder if the last finder was going off an old pocket query.
