We just had an interesting experience, here’s my log on GC556QM.

After finding the new cache nearby we decided we needed to find just one more before heading home. We had practically walked past it on our way over, should have grabbed it then but you know how it goes when there’s a FTF to be found! My son didn’t really care too much about the cache because there’s a rotting deer carcass nearby, boys find this to be much more interesting for sure! My daughter and I found the cache and signed the log while he pestered us to go over and smell how gross it was. I didn’t realize it until a little later but my other son was finding what I’m guessing was drugs in a nearby tree, although he didn’t tell me about it until later. I love that my teenage son was more thrilled about the railway ties that he found than with the drugs, which he left in place. Had I known about them I probably would have picked it up and brought them to the cops, but he didn’t tell me until we were leaving and couldn’t remember which tree they were in. Good times! 😉 Thanks for placing this one, we had a good time.

This actually wasn’t my first time finding drugs in the woods while geocaching.  I’ve run into pot plants probably half a dozen times over the years and one other time we found a little bag of drugs under a fake leaf.  At a different cache yesterday we found an old mattress, which my son was joking about because he has been asking for a new one and here was one for us in the woods!  We find sunglasses and pens/pencils near caches all the time.  Once we found a discarded bike on the side of a trail.  We went back a few days later and could tell that weeds had been growing in it for a long time so we took it home.  I’m sure there’s more, can’t think of it now.

I too have found drugs near a cache.   However, we all need to be extremely cautious when out in remote areas if we find marijuana plants and especially large plots of them as these could have bobby traps and surveillance.   We should consider these highly dangerous and remove ourselves immediately from the area and contact law enforcement.   Large scale growing is common in our National Forests, State Forest, and County Forests due to their large tracts of land.

I got to witness a murder once near a cache.

Doesn’t sound like a very good caching experience

I only ever found a dead wolf once in an urban park.

Dead coyotes, dead raccoons, illegal stashes being tossed out, money, and one time, some kind of ceremonial sword. A stolen bike that we reported. Probably lots of other things, but those stand out. Most recently, we found an iPhone and wallet, which had us finding the closest police station to turn them in.

We go to discover cool places or history, and sometimes we find other things. One time I was caching in some woods north of the Twin Cities that had a maze of unofficial trails. I approached a bunch of tarps and decided I didn’t need the cache that badly. Another police report. Who knew that looking for boxes in the woods would result in regular reports to the police?

Yesterday we were doing some kayak-caching and on one of the islands we found a rope swing up on a tree branch.  My daughter gave it a try, it was hilarious.  She was too tall for it and instead of swinging gracefully above the water, she collided with it.  Lots of laughing!
