One of the jobs of the WGA Board is to plan and carry out events.  Many geocachers look forward to the many new caches placed at events (or just to cache in a new area) and want to spend a large amount of time caching.  While board members do often get to do a little caching at events, most of the time is spent working, making sure that the event is running smoothly and socializing with members.  How do you feel about spending your time this way at WGA events?  Or do you have a suggestion on changing things to suite your own plans for WGA events?

Thank you for the question. I personally love events. It’s a great way to meet new cachers and make new friends or get acquainted with old friends. Not only do I like attending I also love hosting events I have hosted numerous events in the past couple years. I almost get more enjoyment of seeing who comes and meeting who comes than going out at the events and finding caches. The caches will be there another day the event last a day or 2. I would not try to change the events to meet my needs but possibly try to think of more ideas to try at the events.

All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

At the last WGA picnic, I helped out at the event instead of caching. I found one cache at the picnic, and I was okay with that.  Geocaching to me is the overall experiences.  It’s the people that you meet, and the places that you see.  For me, it’s not just about the numbers.  I really love the social aspect of it as well.

I never attend events to cache, I cache at events because they are there and available. If being on the board means that I am unable to cache with my friends, then so be it.  The caches will be there at a later date.  On the other hand, if socializing with the membership means going out and caching with a new group that I haven’t cached with before, I’m up for that.  To me, the events should be more about meeting up fellow WGA members, regardless of whether you are on the board or not.  Numbers are secondary to the event.

My posts should in no way be considered as the views or opinions of the WGA or its Board of Directors. All posts made under my name are my personal opinions only.

Volunteering is sort of why we are running for the board.  Therefore, hosting and helping out at events is nothing new to me.  My children tend to enjoy helping out more so than searching for some of the caches.  Giving back is definitely something we have been doing for a while now.

My approach to being on the BOD and still having time to geocache has been to arrive a day early or stay a day after.  I pretty much have planned to just spend the time at the event getting done what needs to be done and being available.  I have just asked for a lunch break typically so I can eat and stretch my legs.  This past year it was quite a change to have other BOD members step up to help sell things so I could walk away for a few hours it almost felt strange.  I really feel if all BOD members sign up and take a role in the events, it makes the workload lighter for everyone and would make it possible for BOD to have some down time.  If you would even call it down time because I am usually talking with members.  You have to come to the events with that mindset.
