On July 10, 2017, Bill Taves, better known as Mister Greenthumb, lost his courageous battle against cancer.  He was a family man, who loved his wife of 50 years, his two children, and his 5 grandkids. Bill had a love for everything outdoors-fishing, hiking, camping, biking, and especially geocaching.  In his 11 years of caching, he met so many other cachers that became part of his extended family. Their messages of support throughout his cancer diagnosis kept his spirits up and gave him the energy to fight.  Through all of the ups and downs of the last year, Bill maintained a positive attitude and continued to inspire those around him.

Mister Greenthumb had a profound impact on the geocaching community, and was known for his memorable hides.  You can’t take a walk on the Bug Line or drive by an old silo without thinking of him and finding one of his caches. It all began on March 11, 2006, when OPPS5 (Bill’s daughter and family) invited Mister Greenthumb and Sunshine to find a few geocaches with them.  With his love of the outdoors, they thought he would enjoy this new hobby. They had a good time, so in April his kids bought him his own GPS.  He thought he would like to keep geocaching, but wasn’t sure if he would log the caches.  Well, we all know that turned out.  In his 11 years of caching, Mister Greenthumb and Sunshine had 11.010 finds and over 600 hides.  He logged his last cache find on July 3, only a week before his passing.

August 19, 2017, would have been Mister Greenthumb and Sunshine’s 50th Anniversary.  He had planned to have a geocaching event that day to celebrate 50 years with the love of his life, Vicki. To carry on his wish, we would like to invite all of his geocaching friends and family to celebrate Mister Greenthumb and Sunshine’s 50th wedding anniversary and his amazing life at 12:00 noon at Lisbon Park in the lower pavilion. Please bring a dish to pass and your own beverages. Cake, paper products, and bottled water will be provided. Seating is limited, so bring some extra chairs.

While some tears may be shed, we hope you will all remember his kindness, compassion, sense of humor, and love of life by sharing your stories of his friendship and remembering the good times you had with him and Sunshine.  What he would want most from all of us is to spend time enjoying the beautiful outdoors with our family and friends and living our lives to inspire others.  Please join us to honor the legacy he has left for all of us.
