This summer I will be working with camp counselors who will be introducing young children to geocaching. We have a limited number of handheld devices. What do you suggest I tell them to get on their phones for caching purposes? It should be free or of a minimal charge. The counselors are all adults, and most of the generation where technology has always been a part of their lives. It should be intuitive, since I am certainly not going to be able to show them how to use it. The children will be 4-6 years old, so they won’t be on the devices themselves.
If you’re looking at simply being able to punch in coordinates and have them go find them, I use an app (on iPhone) called Free GPS for that. The price right and it’s very simple to use.

The app from geocaching.com is free, but for non-premium members will only show the three closest caches that are a 2.0 or less. C:geo for androids and Cachly ($4.99) for iphones are MUCH better choices.
I second Hack1of2 choices of Cachly (iphone) and c:geo (Android) as the best of breed.
One word of caution: these apps can use up a lot of data on the fly, so I recommend that you store the caches offline first using wi-fi if possible.

I LOVE Hamster! I’ve been using it for a few years now. There are some people who consistently write fun, witty logs, and I love to keep up with them through Hamster.

Ours is just a one-day field trip and taking kids out in small groups. But I am putting together an info sheet for parents and I will include your idea. Do you have details or should I just refer them to the Bubolz phone number and website?

What is this Hamster app? Did a search on Apple’s app store, and only found Hamster games.
