Hey I was thinking of placing some new caches today and I know that if it is in the National Forest you are supposed to fill out a form and let them know but when I went to their webpage for geocaching, it was blank. Does anyone know if we still need to let them know about caches we’ve placed?
The form you are referring to is for placing caches on lands managed by WI DNR. (I just submitted 9 of them recently.) My interpretation of the blank page is that there is no policy about geocaching on Nicolet.Chequamegon National Forest lands. Looking at the maps, it is obvious that there are caches already existing on NF lands. I would recommend calling the ranger district where you plan to place the caches and inquire about their policy/ask permission to place caches.

I remember seeing that page a couple of years ago, at the time it said you didn’t need any special permits or permission. Just go ahead and place.

I’d still recommend contacting the District Ranger Station ahead of time. A friend of mine once placed a couple caches on NF land and they were subsequently removed by someone who logged a note on the cache pages citing a string of state and federal regulations prohibiting the placement of these caches. Point is, there may be some places to avoid that the average person isn’t aware of.
