Why do you want to run for the BOD? Is it bringing a certain skillset, a want for change, continue growing what is there, personal growth, one of many other things?

And what interests you to run this year?

The bottom line is that I enjoy getting people involved – in this case – geocachers involved with all that goes on in the world of geocaching in our great state of Wisconsin. This list includes, but is not limited to WGA events (such as campout, picnic, etc.), Lonely Cache Game, Travel Bug Race, hiding caches, finding caches, solving puzzles and more!

I feel that I am a fairly good motivator and can get people excited. I am a visionary – a big idea person.  I love thinking big and imagining “what if”. I am fairly good at organizing an event and/or a group of people and delagating tasks.

Do I want change? I am not about change for the benefit of change. It needs to make sense. At the same time, if changes are proposed and what the membership feels is needed, I can work with that too!

Why this year? It’s a great time to get involved. The WGA has some great things going and I think I could work well with current and new Board members to make them even better.

I’ve wanted to run for the board for a long while.  I’ve been nominated to run multiple times over the last half dozen years, but with my young kids, I knew I wouldn’t have the time to commit to the responsibilities I would be taking on.  I talked with my wife, Lisa, about it last year during WGA elections and we both agreed that this year would be a year that I could finally say YES.   I’ve enjoyed caching and meeting others at events.  I want to help the WGA continue to grow and get the word out about geocaching as a fun family activity.  I think I’m good at seeing varying viewpoints and summarizing the pros/cons of situations.  I think overall the current board has done a good job given the constraints of this past year’s pandemic and I’d like to help however I can.

Please note: my comments are mine alone and may not necessarily reflect an official stance of the WGA Board of Directors.

Running for the board had never really crossed my mind until I had been nominated by a fellow member (whoever that was, thank you!).  I had convinced myself that because I didn’t have thousands of finds, I wasn’t qualified.  As I mentioned in my candidate introduction, it’s the relationships I’ve made geocaching that encouraged me to accept the nomination.

Being a member of the board will allow me to grow as a cacher and as a person.  I’m relatively soft spoken by nature, someone who listens first before contributing.  I’ve been super thankful to have other amazing cachers want to work with me and show me the ropes.  I went into teaching because I wanted to be the teacher my teacher was to me.  The same is true for pursuing a position on the board of directors.

I’m willing to learn.  I think I bring a fresh perspective that won’t change things for change’s sake, but for the benefit and growth of the organization.  Tradition is important.  Maintaining the tenets of who we are is essential.  Showing those values to new cachers will do nothing but enhance the game and ensure its legacy moving forward.

I am running for the board to serve the members of the statewide organization, with hopes that it will prosper and grow from the position it is in now. I have always enjoyed being an active member within organizations and hobbies that I am passionate about. A few years ago, I was on the WGA BOD election’s ballet and didn’t quite make it onto the BOD. I have have been asked since, if I would be interested in a nomination. Last year I simply could not except a nomination because my work had taken me out-of-state for a number of months a I felt that I would not be able to fulfill my duties. Recently, when I was asked, I knew this would be a great year to except a nomination. Work for me is more localized now and the kid’s activity levels and needs have calmed some. If elected, I look forward to serving the membership and improving on what is already a great organization!

From me, it has been meeting all the member geocachers across the state and the friendships made along the way.  I have enjoyed the many places the WGA events have taken me to explore as well.  The interesting part of this journey has been the various board members I have served with – from their individual skill sets, to their interests, to their leadership, to their perspective, to their experiences that they have brought to the table.  I have celebrated with the successes, I have cringed at some of the thoughts and decisions, but all in all, have welcomed the new while providing the historical aspect as well.  While I have tried to step back from the merchandise sales, I keep getting drawn back because it is what funds the WGA operations.  With financial donations being way down, we have managed to support the website and all the event related expenses from the merchandise sales.  In 2020, we made the switch from PayPal to Square which has given us a better system for inventory.  While we greatly need to sell down what we have, I do have some ideas on new items to offer in 2021.  I am looking forward to how things emerge on the other side of this pandemic and role geocaching in wisconsin will take in the recovery.

I believe my time on the board was brief and there is more that I can do and would like to be a part of. Whether that is more virtual events, more Geo 101s for the new cachers or revamping the logo. There is a lot more that can be done and it is what you make it.
