    What are your thoughts on Board Term Limits? Based on various articles, it appears a majority (85+%) of non-profit organizations have term limits.

    What do you think the pros and cons are of term limits and why?

      I believe that term limits bring in new and fresh ideas.  I also believe that experience makes a difference.  I would like to see a mix of new and experienced cachers on the WGA Board.  Term limit of 2 years is a good idea because it keeps members interested in running for the board without the long term commitment. A con would be that is someone is doing a fantastic job and their term is up.  The opportunity of being able to run again should be an option.

      Here are some of my thoughts on board term limits.

      Pros:

      – Having a fresh influx of faces and ideas

      – Prevents burn out – Helps prevent the feeling that “a few people do all the work”

      – Encourages participation

      Cons:

      – It can be difficult finding board members to serve as people may be hesitant to volunteer

      – Short or limited terms may mean that members can’t effectively serve or have time to implement ideas

      – May lose valuable experience from members who have “been around the block”

        Setting limits at two years is a good idea, as fresh ideas are always welcomed. This would also cut down on possible ongoing controversies, which I’m determined to work on squelching, if any arrises.

        I am all for term limits. It gives other qualified people to have a chance to run and bring something new to the table. Everyone has their own unique ideas and term limits gives people who are genuinely interested and willing to bring those ideas to life a chance.

        I second the idea of either the current or past members a chance to run again as well.

        I think term limits for elected positions are generally a bad idea. If someone is doing well representing a body and the members of that body prefer them to the other available options, what sense does it make to get rid of them? Institutional knowledge is incredibly valuable. I get the desire to have fresh blood and new ideas, but there are nine positions on this board; there’s plenty of room and plenty of voluntary churn of board members for new people to step up.

          In a volunteer run organization, I don’t know if term limits are as necessary as often it’s more likely to run into a scenario of finding enough volunteers to fill positions as there are concerns of someone staying on for too many terms.  Term limits does encourage new people to fill the roles to help with new ideas, but can also cause loss of someone with experience who still has interest in contributing.

            My take on term limits

            <!– [if !supportLists]–>1)    <!–[endif]–>Takes away choices – voters have the choice to keep people on the board. 

            <!– [if !supportLists]–>2)    <!–[endif]–>More turnover decreases board capacity – having a few experienced/seasoned board members keeps things moving and continuity.  As new members come on each year, they need some time to learn the position, get up to speed and understand the history behind things.

            <!– [if !supportLists]–>3)    <!–[endif]–>Limited terms mean board members do not have time to develop the knowledge or expertise on things.  In my case, I feel I have a good understanding of the need for merchandise which is the WGA’s primary source of income.  I also bring the history of things that have happened.

            <!– [if !supportLists]–>4)    <!–[endif]–>It would force people who are being effective out of the board.  Forcing people out is a bad return on the investment of board members time spent learning and understanding the organization.

            <!– [if !supportLists]–>5)    <!–[endif]–>Enough candidates to have a full board  – there have been years the WGA has struggled to have enough people run to fill all vacant spots.

            On the surface, term limits may sound like a great idea but is it really necessary to mandate that people who are effective and seasoned be forced out.  There is a mechanism for removal of people who are being unresponsive, ineffective and that is the whole election process. WGA has bylaws for removal of board members not completing their duties as well.
