Geocaching is a global game of treasure hunting using longitude and latitude coordinates, and is a fun filled adventure for all ages. With a GPS receiver, and internet access, you are ready to explore and search for a “geocache”. Or if you do not have a GPS receiver, just bring your smart phone preloaded with the geocaching app. This session will cover the basics needed to enjoy this eco-friendly and social distancing outside activity including suggested equipment, the website, how to search for a cache and types of caches. You will enjoy the thrill of the hunt but the real discovery is the countless locations of natural beauty and historical interest you will find that you never knew existed. Families are encouraged to participate. Please dress for the weather (mosquito repellent, suncreen, sunglasses recommended).
We will start with a very short discussion of how to start, that will last about 15 minutes. Then we will head down the trail with GPS recievers or smart phones in hand to find a few caches, finishing off with a fake rock at the location where the recent $1000 rock was hidden.
Due to the Covid – 19 epidemic, it is requested that masks and social distancing be used while in or near the shelter. Once on the trail, masks are not requested as hiking is very safe if we keep our distance from each other.
This event is intended for new geocachers to learn the ropes. Veteran geocachers are welcome to attend to help with the learning process.
