We wanted to break the record for most caches found in one day in Wisconsin. Based off of a WGA thread, the highest number I could find was 116 in one day in Wisconsin. Today we got our chance.
My wife and I enlisted a friend and planned a route around the “Geocaching Capital of the Midwest” in West Bend, WI. We had no idea what was possible – 10-12/hr maybe if we were really moving fast. We had a babysitter so we hoped for good weather (scattered T-storms), and woke up early at 4 AM to make the one hour drive. We picked 150 traditional caches of 3 stars difficulty or less that had been recently found and set a limit of 5 minutes searching per cache. All three of us in one car working together.
To make a LONG day a short story we ended up finding/logging 164 caches in one day with only 12 DNFs all day. We added some caches on our way home because we were ahead of schedule, but all were done in Washington Co. We started caching at 4:56 AM and ended at 5:24 PM because we were becoming delirious. I had another 90 minutes logging all of the caches when I got home.
The hardest part was keeping up energy and interest. Overall the day was rewarding to see how many we could find, but it wasn’t the most interesting geocaching day for us. Lots of P&Gs.
Thank you to all of the COs in Washington County. Hopefully our record run can inspire others!! Records are meant to be broken, but it may be a while before we try again. See you at the West Bend Cache Ba$h this year.

WELL DONE!! 😀
06/23/2013 at 10:43 pm #1970803On the contrary, some of my favorite finds and days of geocaching are the ones which take me off the beaten path for an hour or so in a place I have never visited before (ie. Room to Roam series). I think that is the essence of geocaching.
Yesterday I was just interested in seeing how far we could push ourselves.
I don’t really have a desire to do it again.06/23/2013 at 11:14 pm #1970804Job well done, however I have to burst your bubble. Some cachers from Illinois were in WB on 6/8 and are at 167 and still logging. I would also bet that Bobcam and probably a few others have found over 200 in a day.
06/23/2013 at 11:17 pm #1970805Records are meant to be broken and it looks like some are already at it. It still is a marathon day and after doing 127 one day in WB, I know the grueling time that it is.
Following the signals from space.

I won’t do it again. I’ll take a 2 hour hike for two caches over a run of 10 PNG caches in two hours any day.
If I need to set up a milestone, then yeah, I’ll go on a run and even then, it is usually around 20.

06/24/2013 at 6:29 pm #1970808I don’t count power trails when doing a run. Any schmuck can do 200 caches in a day if they are all .1 of a mile apart on a power trail.
It’s more challenging to drive all over town racking up numbers on different caches. The trick is picking a route and go.
06/24/2013 at 8:40 pm #1970809That’s the best part of this sport is that you can do it with different groups and it means something different to everyone.
My kids and I love the park and cemetery hides.
My wife and I love the high favorites and beautiful, new places.
My friends and I love the long hikes through snow and prairies.
I personally love the puzzle hides. After doing a “speed caching” run I can appreciate it like I respect those who run marathons or long triathlons. Not that I want to do any of those myself. I also worry about power trails “littering” the side of roadways.
You have to be careful too. My wife almost got swiped on the side of the road, so be aware of inattentive drivers. Safety comes before stealth. Always take a friend with you and I always put my hazard lights on.
06/25/2013 at 10:48 am #1970810Finding all those signpost / guard rail caches in WB is about as much fun as watching paint dry. That said, I have found a bunch of them…its hard to drive anywhere in town without passing a dozen or three on the way….but they get tedious very quickly. Congrats on your stamina.
