It’s all in fun fellows! Right? Some people care about the numbers, and some don’t. But in ordered to give definitive awards, you need to utilize numbers. I’d compare it to hockey, the Maurice Richard trophy is given to the player each year with the most goals, not necessarily the league’s best goal scorer. The Art Ross Trophy is given to the player with the most points, not the league’s best scorer.
If you combine subjective as well as objective categories, you’ll have the best of both worlds. It’ll cater to cachers who like the #’s part of caching as well as though who like the experience itself.

    That’s just my $0.02 😀

How about a category for cacher who fell down the most while caching. I might have a shot at that one! 😆

Can we have a category for “getting so far off track on a trail that they had to walk highway 27 for a mile back to the park entrance and then back in?” We’d be a shoo-in for that one!

How about a nice bonfire, black tie affair in a ballroom with zuma! in his Speedos as the emcee?

    OMG!!!!!

I dont read the forums for a couple of days, and all hell breaks loose. Tallk about the good, the bad and the ugly!

    bonfire – good
    blackties – bad
(The ugly is left to your imagination, but please dont work on the imagining part to hard.)

I’m thinking we need a category for the most serious injury sustained on a cache of terrain 2 or less. And I agree that we should steer clear of any sort of award related to number of finds. Not only would it add fuel to the fire, as stated earlier, but it would also be a real pain to determine.

Bandits – A most wonderful suggestion. I think Collins idea of a dinner/hotel etc. would be perfect. Wisconsin Dells?

WOW Frizz actually likes one of my ideas!!! Yes wisconsin dells may just be the perfect setting or a hotel with a waterpark say in wausau!!! cuz it is also in the middle of the state!!

BTW BAH HUMBUG if people don’t want to attend they don’t have to .. Lets just plan this thing!!!

I nominate Zuma for “Most Offensive Fouls”. He has broken multiple cachers iin the pursuit of a goal, most spectacularly Da Bloodhound.

    I’ll voice my opinion.

I think that an awards dinner is a good idea in theory. But I would steer away from any awards that deal with numbers. You have some school kids who love geocaching but can’t get to any, because they can’t drive. Some folks who love geocaching work several jobs and can’t get out much either. Should their expertise and enthusiasm be counted any less than some retired folk who have all the time they want to find geocaches (or self-employed schmucks such as myself)?

I see these awards as a potential sore spot for a lot of cachers…ie: “well there’s a surprise, they won – again.”

I’d rather see awards given by peers. Perhaps favorite logs, favorite hides, favorite containers, etc. I’d like to see regional awards. I’m an avid cacher in my little corner of he world, but I’ve never met many of the cachers whose names appear regularly on these forums. Naturally, I would know my local cachers better than folks who live further away.

I don’t know how the WGA would set up an awards program. I’ve seen the problems that COTM has caused in the past. I’d hate to see the awards program travel down the same path. Not to mention our Board is probably already overwhelmed. How would you collect and sort through the votes?

Sounds like it would be a great idea to move forward with this. The idea to keep the numbers out is something we had not thought of but are most willing to go with to insure it remains light hearted and fun!

Please keep the ideas rolling as far as location, categories and awards ideas.

Also, we are thinking about putting together a short video by compiling photos from anyone interested in submitting them. We would show the video during the event and make copies available for anyone who wanted one (perhaps for a very small fee to cover duplication costs).

We are in agreement with the last 2 posts in regard to the awards.

A hotel weekend sounds like a lot of fun in mid-winter. Forget about black tie, tho!

I think Tiedyeskycrew is on the right path — if there are any awards, it should be for those folks who do the most to make this all fun. Numbers-based awards will only get people irritated.

Seems like a difficult proposition. I agree that a numbers based awards system could cause irritation. You could use “best view”, “most unique container”, “cleverest puzzle” etc… but, it’d be tough to come up with nominees simply because noone’s done them all to see which ones are superior! There are some insanely awesome caches in northern Wisconsin, but these will undoubtedly not get nominated, and if they do, will not win simply because there aren’t alot of people who have done them. Is this fair? It’s like voting for “best picture” if you havn’t seen all the other pictures up for the award. Therefore, it becomes a bit of a popularity contest. The caches that get hit the most get the most votes and now we’re back into a numbers based award and possible irritation. Seems like a tough deal to pull off fairly.

It seems like a great number of people aren’t crazy about the idea of an awards dinner. Might I propose a compromise? Would the membership be interested in a winter get together without the awards. Did seem to be some interest in spending time in the Dells for a weekend perhaps.

We here the majority and it sounds like we need to take this in a totally different direction or abandon the idea all together. 😥 Just trying to change things up a bit. Perhaps we will come up with something a little more fun that everyone can enjoy! 🙂

Love the idea Bandits and I think I may have a way around the numbers stuff. For one of our class reunions (nevermind which one) we had a paper scavenger hunt.

What we came up with was a list of questions that we printed out on sheets. It asked questions of classmates so we all could learn about some of the life experiences we had had in the years since we left school.

This method would work as it would only involve the people able to attend the gathering, would not require a lot of searching for stats and could really bring out some good stories.

Some examples of questions could be: Who has the oldest vehicle used for caching. Have you ever had Lymes disease as a result of caching. Who has found the most caches in one 24 hr period. All these answers would be worth one point. Add em up, Make anyone who claims a point tell their story and 12 hours later you have a winner or winners. The questions are easy to come up with once you get going and are a lot of fun to think up. I think this would accomplish the goal of getting a group together and all sharing experiences.

    Mrs Sloughfoot.
