There are picnic facilities at all three campgrounds (Castle Mound, East Fork and Pigeon Creek). All have hand pumps for water, picnic tables, grills and pit toilets. Castle Mound and Pigeon Creek have playground equipment and are ADA accessible. Perry Creek and Oxbow Pond provide limited picnic facilities such as picnic tables and grills.

A log cabin shelter is available at the Castle Mound campground which includes a stone fireplace, electricity, tables and an outdoor cooking grill. It is reservable by contacting the property. RESERVED !!

For those who want to camp here is the camping blurb: Camping — The shower/flush toilet building and the dump station at Castle Mound campground are now closed for the season. Castle Mound and Pigeon Creek campgrounds are open on a first-come, first-serve basis with a limited number of sites plowed in each. East Fork campground and the Outdoor Group camp are closed until April 15th

All campgrounds have reservable campsites with Castle Mound on the reservation season from May 1 through the second weekend in October. East Fork and Pigeon Creek campgrounds are on the reservation season from the Thursday before Memorial weekend through Labor Day weekend. The outdoor group camp is on the reservation season from April 15 through November 30. The indoor group camp is on the reservation system year-round. Go online to make a reservation or call 888-947-2757, TTY 800-274-7275.

And if you’re in to this sort of thing, GC615 is there and one of WI’s oldest cache. It’s a great view, I’d highly recommend it.

Has anyone ever camped there? Wondering what the sites in Castle Mound are like for tent camping.

The Black River State Forest has one reservable cabin available year-round for groups of up to 12 people.

The cabin is located approximately 15 miles northeast of Black River Falls. The two-bedroom cabin is furnished with an electric cook stove, refrigerator, kitchen sink, a flushtoilet and shower, six bunk bed frames, radiant floor heat, and a gas fireplace.

Black River State Forest has 98 camping sites or which 14 have electric service. I have never been there before, but the pictures look like typical State Park/Forest campsites. Other info is:

Campground types

Campgrounds come in a number of different categories. On one end of the spectrum, the campground is very developed with paved walking paths and modern plumbing. On the other end it could merely be a previously cleared tent pad with no bathroom or drinking water amenities.

• Modern campgrounds provide showers, flush toilets and running tap water.
• Rustic campgrounds provide only vault toilets and hand-pump wells for drinking water.
• Primitive or remote campsites are a diverse group that can include any combination of the following amenities:
• pit toilets;
• open air toilets;
• no toilets;
• hand-pump drinking water wells; and/or
• no drinking water access.

Soooo….was looking at the campground today, and it looks like the only shower area is at Castle Mound. I know its a little bit away yet, but what’s the plan lol. Where are you staying?

The shelter that the WGA reserved is at the Castle Mound Shelter, if that helps.

Personally, I probably won’t camp because we don’t live too far away, I’ll probably make a day trip out of it. Although, I do have a reputation for reserving camping sites I don’t need for WGA events, maybe I’ll get the urge for this one too.

I actually live pretty close so it will be a day trip for me.

If we can swing it after vacation, we will be staying at the Best Western with the Orange Moose.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

That would be Best Western Arrowhead Lodge. 🙂

I just took a peek at the picnic location. Wow – over 200 caches within the boundaries of the park. It looks like the Castle Mound Shelter where we’ll meet for the event is actually in the Castle Mound Pine Forest State Natural Area, which itself appears to be part of the Black River State Forest. Not sure if Kim and I will be able to get all 200+ in just one day… 😉

For those of you not camping, the Best Western Arrowhead lodge is VERY close by. I also noticed two classic caches from 2001 that are nearby.

Shelter is at N44 17.050 W90 49.800

The nearest existing cache is GC1GAMB.

Hmmm….to camp, or not to camp, that is the question… :-)
