Please outline what you have done in the past to make the WGA Picnic and Campout a success, and what you plan on doing to help those events be successful during the next 2 years.
01/17/2008 at 5:26 am #1883538What makes the campout and picnic a success is the attendance of people at these events and the smiles I see on faces. I especially love it when people who have never geocached before come to event to learn about it. We have created new geocachers at some of our events.
In the last 2 years:
2006 Campout
I assisted with camper registration, day of registration and the pancake breakfast. Since it was my first event on the board, and I was learning the ropes, I sort of did whatever people needed me to do.2006 Picnic
I served as co-chair for this event.
I scouted the location and several possible spots for our base of operations. I took pictures and reported back to the board my findings.
I hid some temporary caches
I think this was the event where I helped assemble the booklets (with Jeremy and Brain Tie.)
I assisted with set up, registration and clean up2007 Campout
I served as co-chair for this event
I assisted with temporary cache placement by acting as the official registrar of cache information
I, with help, put together the event booklet
I assisted with set, uploaded coordinates (day and night caches) and helped with clean up
I emceed the meeting2007 Picnic
As we had established committees during 2007, I was not directly involved in the planning of the picnic, but I did keep close tabs on the committee’s progress. I think they did a spectacular job. I actually missed having an actual role in the picnic. If elected to another board term, I will be sure to be involved in all events (perhaps even a winter event!) Even if not elected to the board, being involved in the planning and executing of events is a lot of fun. I am willing to help out in any capacity.

01/17/2008 at 6:40 am #1883539I have been involved in the WGA Since May of 2006.
My first WGA Event was the WGA Camp-out in Door County.
I was only into caching seven days as of the start of the camp-out, so I did not to much other than attend. At the 2006 Camp-out, I did odd jobs that needed to be done, as well as helping with caches and cache retrieval.
At the 2007 Camp-out, I was on the Committee, and helped with many things, including helping at registration, Helping to hide caches, as well as retrieve them after the event, as well as General duties as they arose.
In the future, I will continue to help with the events in any way possible, Presently, I am on the 2008 Camp-out Committee, and will help on the Picnic Committee as well when the need arises.

Here I am deficient. I have done nothing to assist in the success of the WGA picnic or Campout aside from attending them. If I was on the board or the location of these events were more local to me the story would be different.
I feel that the physical aspects of these events should be set up by cachers local to the event area, and by that I mean the hides and other coordinate based details. That said the planning can be done from afar, and were I to be a board member I would no doubt be a part of that.
01/17/2008 at 9:29 pm #1883541I’m not going to go back and list all the things I’ve done for WGA events over the past 6 years. Suffice it to say that I’ve spent a significant chunk of time working on these events… but in the end, seeing geocachers enjoying themselves and connecting with others that share similar interests, always makes me feel that the time I invested was well worth it. Some of my recent contributions (for 2007) to WGA events include:
– Hiding temporary caches
– Print out and assembly of temporary cache booklets
– Print out of laminated name tags
– Creation of park maps showing temporary cache locations
– Helping organize temporary cache hiding day (picnic only)
– Coordinating GPS and PDA downloads
– Setting up online event registration system, sending event update emails
– Helped create initial version of Wisconsin Geocacher Bingo
– …While the picnic and campout are always well attended and a fun time for the attendees, it is important that we continue to try new things and mix things up a bit at these events. If they become “stale”, attendance and the fun factor will suffer. For the 2007 picnic, I suggested we try some new event activities that were discussed on the geocaching.com forums. Two of these were actually implemented and well received: Geocacher Bingo and the Turkey Shoot.
And as I stated in my position post, the WGA needs to have more events throughout the state and throughout the year. There has only been one official WGA event that did not feature the hunting of temporary geocaches as its primary activity. I would like to see CITO only and meet-and-greet only WGA events.
01/19/2008 at 11:44 pm #1883542Some things I’ve done at/for the various WGA events: Treasurer’s Report , cache pickup, Registration/downloads, pancake breakfast, garlic mustard death squad, hidden night caches, created automated booklet tool, assembled booklets, cleaned up, storage of WGA property, and more.
If elected, I would continue to do more of the same, and I would like to participate more in the geocache hiding as well.
