    Today is the 7-year anniversary of my first geocache find. She was Beverly (GC28) and I still have fond memories of that first frolic in the woods. OK, who am I kidding — I was alone that day. Lots of things have changed since those halcyon days of the sport. Many a geocacher have burst onto the scene, glowed brightly in their new-found obsession and then flamed out never to return again except for an occasional re-emergence at the annual old-timers’ geo-event. Actually, there is no such event, but wouldn’t that be fun? We could be wheeled into the picnic shelter with our wool comforters over our laps and wave to acknowledge the thundering applause of our adoring and appreciative fans. OK, like I said, who am I kidding? 😆

    Way to Go Ken!!!

    It would be neat to hear stories of old caches. Especially ones with four Digits!!

    Keep on Caching.

    Congrats to you!!! The reason we documented our first 1000 so well is we figured we would enjoy those photos when we are too old to cache. Hope that is a long long time from now.

    Congrats!

    I don’t think I will show this thread to my wife. She is hoping that my obsession will be finished well before seven years.

    LOL, Hey elfdoctors, just toss back her scrapbooking! As one who has gone from that obsession to this, I can say that at least geocaching is easier to share between spouses! 🙄

    Congrats on a looooong commitment to the sport, Ken! Pretty cool that your first find is still active, too. Here’s to many more!

    Congratulations, Ken! Made me stop and think about my own start date – January 2002.

    I remember the cache – Bear Wallow. Four of us, with one GPS, and none of us knew how to work it! We walked right up to the tree stump where the cache was hidden. Pretty good for reading the location, because we did not know about the pointer arrow!

    Amazing how time flies!

    Oh, and for a little snob appeal – I have a 5 digit GC number! 38349.

    Along those lines, I always wonder how Jeremy V managed to get #41?

    Congratulations on the anniversary Ken! More importantly, thanks for taking the geocaching ideas you saw in Illinois and spreading them to Wisconsin by placing your own caches in early 2001.

    Also, thanks for the reminder about my own 7-year anniversary coming up on March 4. She (my addiction) would have been quite upset had I forgotten about it. 🙂 I wonder what kind of gift you are supposed to buy for this occasion?

    I’m a trendsetter Marc… I’ve always got my finger on the pulse of popular culture and have my eyes open to the world, looking for the next big thing. 🙂 Seriously, I saw a posting in a usenet newsgroup and another on the letterboxing site about the creation of the geocaching website. I signed up, but waited until some relatively close caches popped up before going out on my first hunt (I was not as ambitious as Ken).

    #41? Is there an indication somewhere in the profile of how old your ID is? If so, I never knew this.

    WOW! 7 Years!

    That is incredible. Congratulations and keep on having fun.

    Congratulations Ken!!!

    Hey congratulations Ken on the 7 year anniversary. It is good to have a couple of grizzled vets like you and Jeremy here, who remember what cachin was lik before the advent of all the bells and whistles we have today.

    Ken, if you have cachers on your Friends list, it orders them by date of registration with GC.com. It gives their start dates, but not their numbers. The numbers you can find thru a listing on GSAK (Owner ID field).

    Or, if you don’t like GSAK, just go to the persons profile and “hover” the mouse pointer over the link called “See the forum posts of this user” and read the link in the status bar. The id number is at the end of the link, reading something like:

    http://forums.groundspeak.com/gc/index.php?act=Search&CODE=getalluser&mid=4841

    kbraband = 4841
    Active2gether = 125484
    IowaAdmin = 185806

    Also, if you go by the “listed” dates, Ken has one of the oldest events in the database. It appears he was going to have a Fourth of July 2002 Picnic at his home in West Allis(?), but somehow he changed the date to take it off the calendar and it is now listed as occurring on 1/1/2000, well before the start of the website. How do I know this? The archived listing pops up on my list every time I review a cache in this area.
