I recieved a phone call today from the Greendale police department. Here is the email I sent the owner of the cache:
Hi
I was out doing a couple of the battleship series. B1 and the other just up the block on Root River Pkwy. I guess I looked suspicous to somebody because they called the cops on me. The police officer requested that you call him to give him some info. I’m not sure if they did it but he mentioned the bomb squad being called out. His name is officer (___) . I think he just wants to know about them.As you see he mentioned the bomb squad. I am not sure if they were actually called out or not on this one. This was a wierd call in that I just wasn’t expecting something like this. I have been stopped plenty of times while caching, but never called on it.
I’m wondering what happened with the sticker idea? This might have saved some effort on alot of peoples time. I’m wondering too if maybe magnetic bumperstickers (I hate the regular ones!) or something might help? I do place the placard in the windshield from the Cache Bash about caching in the area, but you have to walk up to my truck to see it.

That’s interesting. We DNF’d it just a few days after you logged your find. Maybe the police removed it as others have also DNF’d this week. It’s strange you got a phone call from the police. Never heard of that before. 😕

04/10/2010 at 9:10 pm #1927256Interesting. I would have referred the officer to the Land manager of the Milwaukee county parks. The page says permission was granted so there has to be an application on record for that cache. I know when new caches in Milwaukee County parks are approved the placer gets a permit number as of this year. I would just try to be as polite and accommodating as possible.

I couldn’t figure out why Greendale police would be calling other than caching. I guess my stroll over to the trees and minute and a half in there freaked somebody out passing by. Like I was a terrorist going to blow up some trees!

We couldn’t figure how they knew to call you, but then realized the person who called it in gave them your license plate #.

Thank you for posting this here. We’ll be taking a look at this in the Community Eduaction Comitee to see if we can help prevent this in the future.

This continues to be refined, and we are in the price quote area now. Jeremy is working on it. The board did vote to purchase these for resale and make them available.
As an aside, Seth and I are just back from 2 long days caching lower Michigan. Of the caches we found, probably 50 – 60 of them were regular size and could have had a MIGO sticker. Only 2 of them actually did have the MIGO sticer, so I am not real convinced that enough people are going to use them to make much of an impact in the problem you describe.

04/12/2010 at 9:06 pm #1927261I personally have had a visit to my home .. when I lived in Milwaukee .. the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Dept brought a geocache container to my door that had been found. The Sheriff who found it knew I was a geocacher and found my address .. even though it was not mine.
Now that I live in Waukesha .. since one of the Waukesha dispatchers is also a geocacher .. sent a squad to our door to return ammo cans to our door.
At least in both cases, my neighbors knew and understood geocaching!!
