As of 31 October 2008 there are 1000 active caches located in or in connection with cemeteries. The magic number was placed by gotta run. Hmmm, all hallow’s eve?
The placing of cemetery caches was slow at first. Lil Otter placed the first ones (circa 2002). I began copying her (October 2004). Following the adoption of the WSQ indicator (2007) things picked up some. Then, within the last six months or so, they exploded.
There are dozen of cachers who have placed cemetery caches. Some account for some large numbers, others a handful, still others one or two.
The big names, with 20 or more hides, are:
158 Marc_54140
78 Jimandlinda
72 gottarun
40 Gr8Eyes
37 Ecorangers
33 sweetlife
24 Jack Pine Savage
23 Lance & Lancelot
21 Peach107
20 Hike and Seek
20 Subdoc56There are 15 cachers who have between 5 and 20 caches. Scrolling thru the list there are almost 200 additional cachers who have placed cemetery caches.
A big Thank You to all the cachers involved in the effort.

09/05/2009 at 2:01 am #1897350As of 1 September 2009 there are around 1420 active cemetery caches in the state.
The numbers have been steadily increasing, but a consistent number of archives keeps it down.
Some new players are coming on the scene, as well as the old ones adding to their numbers. GR8 Eyes in particular, as planted quite a few these past months.

I’m glad for the WSQ moniker, while not all have them it helps me avoid cemetery caches unless they are the last in a area. I encourage everyone to continue it’s use for those of us who don’t care to chase them.
Thanks!

Our 21st WSQ was published today. WSQ St. Pauls GC1Y275 is the oldest Evangelical and Reformed church in Wisconsin. WP1 takes you to a historical marker to solve the final. I checked and all but 2 of our WSQ’s are older cemeteries with historical significance. I have succesfully placed the hides in almost all of them in a manner requiring you to walk through the gravesites to get to the cache. We’ve become hooked on finding WSQ’s too and often go out for only looking for them now.

I completely agree; cemetery caches should never be “chased.”
