A Garmin Legend was the first GPSr that we ever had. Absolutely no problems with it at all.. Not being one to keep stuff too long we’ve moved on…

    I think it’s a super unit for the $$$… I give it a thumbs up… FWIW

I’m sure this unit would suffice, but it really depends upon what they’re planning on teaching. If they don’t need maps, why spend the extra money on anything beyond the most basic – around $100 – model? I’m thinking of the Garmin Geko 101 or the Magellan Explorist 100.

Since this is a class environment … IF you don’t plan on using the unit for road routes, but just finding waypoints … I agree with others, spend less money. I’m happy with my two Garmins (an old eMap with roads, and a GPS72 without roads).

One additional consideration that I might add … do you anticipate multiple students looking at the same unit at the same time? If so, consider something with a larger display. Again the GPS72 would be a good choice … the GPS72’s screen is 45% wider than that of a eTrex. If you want the wider screen, but also roads, go up to the GPS76. The buttons are bigger on these units too.

DO NOT…I REPEAT…DO NOT LET THEM WASTE MONEY ON EITHER OF THESE UNITS!!!

The idea should never be to “spend money on things they don’t need”…it should be to get the most for the least with the best possibility of expansion. One never knows when a person will start playing around with their unit and decide to discover what else it can do. And before you know it you’ve got a full blown geocacher! I personally do my best to encourage anyone who asks advise to buy to grow. But then I’m simply a communications officer…what do I know? Hey, let me ask the Commander and get back to you on this…he used his Legend until he killed it and then upgraded to the mega Garmin. (Like Alan, I’m a Magellan user but I’m learning that others have their right to use Garmin’s if they want…BLAH!…LOLOLOL!)

I have a legend and like it, I have used it for two and a half years(we got it used on ebay) and think it is a good unit. I like the simple maps, it helps keep your bearings. I also bought the mapsource for it, but that isn’t a necessity. we also have a yellow etrex which works fine but I got use to the features of the legend.

I’ve had good luck with the Garmin Legend but I think to properly answer the question we need to know what they are going to do with it & what features are needed. I’m under the impression they are not going geocaching.

The teacher was introduced to geocaching through my son and planes on teaching geocaching and some rudimentary mapping to the k-12 teachers.
The information that you have supplied is very good and will help him make some decisions.

I started with a Geko 101 and loved it. It served me just fine, and I didn’t care that it was a basic unit. When I got Mom (ldybugldy) her GPSr, I asked her what she wanted, and she wanted the Geko 101 too. It’s perfect for what she wants to do. She’s not interested in getting into this thing as much as some of us, and therefore doesn’t need all those bells & whistles.

My brother (alphacat) has had his legend for more than 2 years. He also has the mapsource software so is able to change the map set in it.

No matter what model they ultimately choose. If there is a Gander Mountain nearby, they will match ANY competitors price. Search the web for the cheapest price, print a copy of the model and price. Take it in and they will match it. If they are getting 6 they may want to call ahead to verify that they have them in stock.

I have bought 7 gps’s through them and probably will not go elsewhere.

I had a problem with my local Gander Mountain when the competitor with the online cheaper price had an actual store in the area. They called them up and since that particular store didn’t have the item in stock, Gander Mountain wouldn’t match the sale price.
