The point here is that there is no way a hand held gps is going to cause a problem in a plane, but I suppose if the airline thinks it does, ya gotta do what they say.

Actually I usually hand the GPSr to the right seat occupant and tell them “Hey, watch this so I don’t get us lost, ok? There ain’t no road signs up here…” 😯

I’ve taken mine on the plane several times. I kept it in the camera bag. Never was questioned and never asked to turn it on/off. Never used it on the plane either as I tend to know where I’m generally flying and well, had great Captains who gave regular updates about where we were.

I made the mistake, a bout 6 yrs ago, of checking my suitcase that contained my GPS, batteries, some camera CD’s, 2 boxes of expensive protein bars and a large pack of batteries along with all my cloths. We got shifted to another airline, the suitcases went missing for almost 2 days and when we DID get them, all the above was MISSING. I was told, “Oh… the people looking through the suitcases to make sure it was yours, must have forgotten to put them back.” yeah RIGHT!! I will NEVER check anything of any value again!!!!

I just carried mine in my carry on through Japan and China without incident. There is no way I would check it!

I always carry it on in my backpack. Never turned it while in flight, but this got me thinking. We’re heading to Alaska Thursday, and B hates flying. Maybe the GPS can amuse him as we travel. Hmm.

I’ve used mine many times while flying.

The 60Csx with the new fabulous and fantastic chipset works well. You don’t even have to hold it right at the window. Otherwise, if you aren’t as lucky to have the new fabulous and fantastic chipset, you will need to keep the unit practically touching the window.

We’ve used ours on planes several times with no issues. We usually load a set of cache coordinates at our destination point, and then GOTO. We can watch the miles tick off very rapidly, track our progress on the maps views, etc.

For quite awhile, our GPS showed 633 miles per hour and 33,000 feet of elevation, but that record got overwritten for some reason. Too bad, it was kinda fun to show off how fast we geocache.
