On a positive note…
Your adoption or archiveal of caches will at least follow your own words.

So , I propose a voluntary annual portfolio review of your cache holdings to determine if you own any cache listings that could be moved, offered up for adoption or archived to open up space for others to place new caches. I am thinking something like 5-10% of your caches. For most cachers that would translate to 1 or 2 caches. For me it is closer to 10 caches and for someone like Ecorangers… well that’s a lot.
03/25/2010 at 11:37 pm #1925796Ecorangers have and will continue to archive caches to make room for others…we did so for both cache ba$hes and also for the 20K event. Tami

35 down, 200 to go. I’m up to 15%
03/26/2010 at 12:34 am #1925798As much as I’d like to take over two of the series…one of them, there’s no way I’m getting strung out to maintain it! And the other, I’m just not sure if we could adequately keep one of the caches in play, so it just might have to be real gone…
On the Left Side of the Road...03/26/2010 at 1:37 am #1925799Sent a PM for the 4 caches in the Mountain Area, Would not want to see any of these disappear
03/26/2010 at 1:49 am #1925800A bittersweet day today as I complete the S|S series that got me hooked on puzzles turning me into a PuzzleJunkie and took over watch duty on the same series for the legend.
Logging the final for this series caused a few tears because of the great memories and the great mentoring provided by S|S.

You guys are all starting to get to me…
I want everyone to know that I am not one for ego stroking and that my ID is intact. I just reached a point of super-frustration. It’s becoming more and more obvious to me there are so many more cachers who respect this CO’s wishes than than that don’t. It is not going unnoticed…

Lots of space opening up around here PC Frog, another handful from a protegee were archived this morning. That must be nearly 50 puzzles archived by gotta-run and -cheeto- in the past couple months. At this rate the Valley is going to look nothing like it did last year, already doesn’t. Let the 1/1 hides begin…

Yep… My solved/unfound list is getting shorter and shorter. Funny… that’s usually a good thing. 😕

I can say the same thing about the todo list for my next trip up to the area….which is sadly not soon enough to catch these vanishing caches.
That said I do respect the decisions made.
03/26/2010 at 7:01 pm #1925805As usual, when we visit the Fox Valley, we overload on caches to look for. The same held true yesterday. There we some that we ran out of time to attempt, and two of these were s|s caches. But we have the necessary information and coordinates for these, so if they get archived before a return visit, we can see what we were asked to see and experience what the CO wanted us to experience. We just may not get the smileys for these.
The same is true for all of the caches that used to be in the state natural areas. There are no physical containers there anymore, but the land is still available to visit just as the original cache owners wanted us to do. So if you have solved any puzzles for seldom|seen’s caches, you have experienced most, if not all, of what he wanted you to get out of the cache. You have done the internet research, you have learned something, you have taxed your brain a bit. If you are doing an in-the-field puzzle, you can still go there to get the information, and if you feel like looking for the hiding spot, you still can. Just no smiley.
And through the adoptions-fosterings-caretakings of many of these caches, we can still “have our cake and eat it too”. Might not be as sweet as before, but still satisfying.
03/27/2010 at 7:50 am #1925806I always was a bit of a trivia peron but now I’ve learned about the history of my adopted home area, how to read braille, learn about copyright infringement, the pareidolia phenomena and other random learnings. I may not have always refered to the learnings as sometimes they were far in the past or pailed in comparison to the finds.
Now my wife just rolls here eyes at all I’ve learned. She doesn’t know if she should thank you or beat you upside the head.
BTW- you can keep anything that requires climbing, Alex…These feet are generally planted firmly on terra firma but I have been known to carry a ladder to a cache before- just ask Dave.
Following the signals from space.
03/28/2010 at 3:30 am #1925807WalkingAdventure is right about his keeping his feet on the ground. Lacknothing can take the tree climbs….we enjoy climbing up trees.
Seriously though, I must echo that I certainly have learned a lot in doing so many of these s|s and -cheeto- puzzles. And finding the caches themselves have been doubly fun because of all the hard work and effort that went into the many solves. Needless to say, I have spent some late hours researching smiley faces, retro games, words and so much more. And there really is nothing more satisfying than knowing you have the right answers, therefore you have the right coordinates and you get the SUCCESS always in green and you are so much smarter as a result!

03/30/2010 at 1:21 pm #1925808Another sad day in the land seeing all the S|S caches in “Disabled” status. I completely respect your decisions Alex, and sincerely hope to see you get back in the groove here shortly. You have a great following and I’d hate to see a few ruin it for you. Your passion for the ? in this sport is unquestionable and it just isn’t the same without these caches in play.
03/30/2010 at 1:25 pm #1925809I will be in town shortly to grab a few….and hopefully get my 100th puzzle find on one of SSs puzzles. Hard to say for sure though as they even when solved many of these are still tricky. I was up late last night (working on puzzles) and saw many a SS activity notice grace my inbox…made me sad…and realize that I need to get my butt in gear if I want to get a find on a few of the ones I have been putting off.
