Early this spring, I was contacted by the naturalist at the Ice Age Visitor Center, to conduct a geocaching class. The Ice Age Visitor Center is within the Kettle Moraine Northern Unit, just west of Dundee (about a half hour north of West Bend).
Just like my previous presentation this summer, i’m looking for some experienced geocaching volunteers (the more the merrier) to come out on the evening of Saturday, July 15th to help out for the cache hunting portion of the program. I would anticipate about a one hour classroom portion, and maybe about an hour or two of temporary / permanent cache hunting in small groups.
It would be nice if the volunteer would pass their GPSr around the group during the hunt to give everybody a little chance with the equipment. If you have more than one GPSr, that would be great too. I figure it would be a good idea to keep the owners and their GPSrs together in the same group.
The participants would be coming from around the Northern Kettle Moraine, including the campgrounds at Long Lake and Greenbush (where we had our picnic last year).
Tentative schedule for July 15th….
6:00 PM
Volunteers arrive (with their GPSR’s) to receive a download of the temp caches.6:30 PM
The classroom portion starts, conducted by the park naturalist and myself.7:30 PM
Class participants split up into groups with one volunteer per group to go out into the park and find the temporary and permanent caches.Dusk
Return to the classroom. This will be the third year running that I have given this presentation at the Ice Age Center. The people there have been very receptive to geocaching, and a good volunteer turnout would really help further that positive relationship.
Please respond here or via e-mail if you would like to help out. My e-mail is: wga2 dot admin at gmail dot com.
The program is open to everybody, so if you are new to geocaching and would like to come out and learn more, of course you are welcome!
NOTE: A valid park sticker is NOT needed, as the Ice Age Visitor Center is not a fee area.

Also willing to carpool with anyone else who might be interested — might be able to borrow a larger vehicle for the trip.

07/09/2006 at 7:10 pm #1763037The classroom portion is being held at the Ice Age Center (N43 38.542 W88 11.436). The temp cache hunting will all be within a 1/2 miles radius of the center. There is also a permanent geocache close by.
07/13/2006 at 1:28 pm #1763038Just heard back from the DNR Naturalist at the Ice Age Center, and everything is a “Go” for this coming Saturday.
The weather looks to be dry but warm. Thank goodness this is taking place in the evening after it starts to cool off.
For those thinking about coming, be sure and bring a hat and plenty of high-powered bug dope. In the past, the flies have be pretty numerous during the day and the skeeters have been pretty numerous in the evening.
07/13/2006 at 3:51 pm #1763039I can be there. REMINDER – Wear Long pants and high stockings. This area is normally full of Poison Ivy. ~tb
