Had an experience yesterday that I wondered if anyone else has had. I was wandering around Racine yesterday, putting together an urban multi cache, getting coordinates, readings off monuments, plaques, murals and even bells. When I got everything together, I still had time to do a cache and the Yellowstone Trail – Racine cache was close by.

After getting to the virtual location and determining the final coordinates, I headed for the find. The location I went to (not the correct one, but that’s another story) was a large (20′ diameter) juniper bush. After searching the outside of the bush fairly thoroughly, I decided that I had to search INSIDE the bush. After waiting for a dogwalker muggle to pass by, I did my best imitation of a Green Beret elbow crawl inside the bush. Now it takes a while to search a bush like this, especially when it is the wrong location. I was in there for maybe 10 minutes when I hear a siren (not that unusual in Racine). I continue searching as the siren gets closer. Finally, I can see a bit of the flashing lights as I give up and crawl backward out of the bush (completely covered in dirt and juniper leaves)…right into the leg of a member of the Racine Police Department. My subsequent discussion with the officer revealed that someone (probably the dog walker) reported a human body lying under a bush in North Beach Park. After determining that I was not dead or an escaped mental patient, and that I had a semi-rational explanation for crawling under a bush on New Year’s Day, we both went on our way. Maybe I need to move quicker to avoid being mistaken for a dead body??

I was wondering….did the officer check the bush to see if there actually was a body in there? Or did he take your word for it?

Yeah, he took a quick look, but I think he assumed that I was the body he was looking for. I hope he doesn’t come back later to look for the cache (since I was at the wrong location).

Thanks for sharing your story. While geocaching in Kentuckiana recently…we attracted the local police from the 11:00pm to 1:00am hours. They were very nice to us and were just making sure “we were all okay,” and then they told us to move on if we were in a park past closing hours.” Tami

    That’s funny!!!

I am not the fastest person around, but I have never been mistaken for a dead body!

I did have vultures circling above me once…so I guess I can pass for a dead body too.

Probably wouldn’t be a good idea for us to team up!
