This one has to do with my auto GPS. I input coordinates for what ever cache I’m going to. Is there something like plugging in an hand held into my auto GPS and once I select a cache the coors automatically upload to my auto? Would save me time.

Just an one more thing about auto GPS. This happen today. I input the coors to my next cache and it tells me go here go there. It seemed strange to me because the cache was like .3 miles away. I follow the directions. Drive like 4 miles . I end up .3 miles down the same road. Just because my car is pointed in the wrong direction when I imputed the coors. GPS’s are great and suck all at the same time!

What kind of GPS unit do you have for your car? Is it factory installed or a portable unit like the Garmin Nuvi? I have a Nuvi that I download pocket queries to using GSAK…more efficient than handloading coordinates. I’ve named mine Catherine after a ditzy co-worker that actually thought she’d won the Nigerian lottery. She’s tried to take me down ATV and snowmobile trails and, yes, taken the “long scenic” route on frequent occasions like yours has. You just have to use common sense when listening to her and think twice before following her directions. I like to zoom out to see what route she’s plotted for me.

I do have the Nuvi. I’ll have to give the GSAK a try. I have called my GPS many names, but not a person. My GPS wanted me to drive over a dike on Lake DuBay.

We use GSAK to send the coordinates to our Nuvi.  When the NUVI (her name is “Trudy”) gets us to the closest parking allowable we then can switch to our handheld GPS units to hike the rest of the way.

I am really going to have to learn how to use GSAK.  We have named our Nuvi “Nigel”.  He has an english accent and uses terms like “take slip road ahead”.

Our geomobile has a built in gps but we still use a Nuvi for caching.  We download pocket queries and load thru GASK also.  If we are within 3/4 of a mile from a cache we get a notification that pops up at the top of the Nuvi screen.  It also shows the cache details if you click on the cache.  If anything ever happens to it I will be sad as I haven’t found another one that I have been able to do this with.

I have a question. Once you downloaded and used it to find the cache how do you delete it from your favorites? I can delete it from recent finds but can’t figure out how remove it otherwise.

Don’t load pocket queries as favorites…is that what you did??? If so you might be able delete them all by plugging your unit into a computer, opening the Nuvi file, opening the gpx file, and deleting your query file. I don’t believe there’s a way to delete one individual cache. PQ’s should be loaded as Points of Interest (POIs), not as Favorites.

Bartrod I do the opposite of what you mentioned.  If you load them as POI’s (points of interest), it only gives you limited info, such as the GC number.  If you load it as favorites/geocaches, it will show you (if you set it up that way) the GC#, Cache Title, D/T, description, and coordinates.  I actually prefer to see that data on my Nuvi.

Having said that, if loaded as favorites, it is potentially trickier to delete them.  There are I think three different macros in GSAK that one can use to transfer geocaches to Nuvi’s, not counting the “export to Garmin POI” command in the file menu (which is a point of interest, not a favorite).  I’m only familiar with the master reset option to erase the favorites but there may be other ways.

A master reset will erase all favorites and will restore your GPSr to the default factory settings.  To perform a master reset on most NUVI’s:
While the NUVI is OFF, press and hold the lower right hand corner of the touchscreen
Power on the device while continuing to hold the display
Remove your finger from the touchscreen when “Erase all user data?” appears and then select “Yes”
The device will now reset, and all favorites will be erased.  You’ll potentially need to re-enter your preferences and any favorites you’d like to keep (such as home address)

A master reset only takes a matter of minutes so it’s not as bad as it sounds, but you may have to re-enter some information.

I load them in my Nuvi as POI’s and I get GC#, cache name, d/t, description, coordinates and logs.  When I load the Nuvi for our next outing it automatically deletes the previous POI’s

I get the same results as raslas. It certainly beats doing a factory reset every time. Not getting the complete info might be a result of the macro being used or maybe just an aberration of the particular Nuvi model.

I need a step by step on how to do this.  Today I was very frustrated by an impromptu road trip and being the driver, I couldn’t tell if a cache was a multi, traditional or what, by what was on the Nuvi.

Hmmm…mine doesn’t do that. I’m supposing you use a different macro than I do…NuviExport.gsk by Lignumaqua on my Garmin Nuvi 50LM.

the macro I use is not supported anymore 🙁   It is garmin-nuvi-exportgpx.gsk by pilotsnipes on Garmin Nuvi 760

I still have that on my desktop…doesn’t always work though. Then I hook up my laptop with Lignumaqua’s macro.
