Now it’s my turn. We’ll be sharing briefly with the LaCrosse Parks Board information about geocaching and placing caches. This came about because I wanted to get permission to place an earthcache in the LaCrosse River Marsh area (where there are some traditional caches already), and was told it needed to be discussed by the board because of the “publication issue.” (I had sent the usual request for permission with links to both gc.com and the earthcache site for them to review).
I’ve got no more than 5 minutes. I have some good ideas on what to say, and lord knows as a storyteller, this should not be a big deal. Just wondering if those who’ve gone before me in ventures like this have any suggestions? I’ll have copy of the generic form to share, but other thoughts are welcome. Thanks.
As an aside, I find this all rather amusing, given that there was just this big deal event with a front page story about geocaching in the area. Go figure.

In addition to an overview of what geocaching is and how it works, I’d also bring along a copy of GC’s cache placement policies so that you will be able to answer specific questions they may have in terms of liability.
In general the placement policies should make most government entities more comfortable with geocaches as they show that the game is somewhat regulated and that steps are taken to insure that there is no unreasonable danger which would arise from the placement of our little plastic boxes.
Oh and let me point out that NO, I have never gone before a government body to explain what geocaching is…just dozens of other people I know or run into who asks questions about it (including several police officers and park officials). I’m more of a spammer than a public speaker (though back in the day my minor was in communications).
12/04/2007 at 9:26 pm #1881760Not too long ago someone posted a link to a great tri fold brochure that we have been handing out at the monthly class we teach and it is a great tool to use.
We also use a powerpoint. It sounds like you will not have time to present something with that much depth but you may want to look at some via a link here somewhere… that will help you make sure you cover what you need to.
Hopefully some more techi people can help with the location of those two great resources.

This will help reassure those who are skeptical that this is not just a THING a few do. The brochure and articles will make for a nice information packet for them.

Love the brochure! It’s a great tool that I think you will be able to use.

Thanks for the link. Sometime in the near future, I ‘m to go in front of our local Library BOD and ask them for permission to place a cache on their property(spankin’ brand new location and facility!) I will print a few of these up and hand them out.
12/06/2007 at 12:41 am #1881764Thanks for the brochure link, and PCFrog, great point about sharing info regarding other areas of the state where geocaching is allowed and encouraged. Hopefully this will go well, I can get my earthcache permission and FINALLY get our gold earthcache master, LOL. I’d tried twice to contact someone about placing an earthcache in Clark County and nada. I may try phoning. Tried close to home and ended up doing a presentation for the parks board.
Maybe there’s a great cosmic message in all this? No scratch that. I don’t want to know what it might be, I’ve had enough dispiriting cosmic messages to last a loooooong time!

It sounds like you have a great handle on things. I do know the LaCrosse Rec staff if I can be of assistance, let me know.AuntieNae

We know Gar from a long time ago. Is Mike Ulrich still with them? He and Dick coached middle school football eons ago. Maybe Trekkin’ should come along, just in case! [/quote]
