Most of you probably don’t know me. I was an early officer and board member of WGA. Before geocaching came to existence, I was interested in GPS from the aviation navigation angle and have remained a GPS enthusiast to present.

A Wisconsin State Representative, Adam Neylon, who is my rep and who I supported, has introduced the GPS Privacy Act AB 767. It has passed the legislature committee and now has to be sent to the reps and senators.

Basically it prohibits the use of a GPS tracking device. The qualifier is “without a person’s consent”. The justification is to prevent stalking a person. Sounds good but as with any law, it can be perverted by police and district attorneys. If this law is passed, somehow it may be used against us. I don’t know how, but there are no limits to the creativity of government to stifle our freedom and twist laws against us.

Adam Neylon ran on limited government, but like most politicians, is anxious to get some new legislation under his name. I urge each of you to contact your representative and state senator to vote against this. I also ask that you contact Neylon to withdraw it. He can be reached at [email protected]

Looks like a BOD committee issue, too, to keep us informed.

      Thanks!

I’m curious why this is even an issue since the Supreme Court has already ruled on this issue, saying the police may not use this type of surveillance without a warrant.

Is Rep. Neylon trying to pass a law in which the police would need to inform a criminal they wish to monitor their location/activities prior to beginning an attempt to monitor them? If that is the case, it seems like terrible legislation without regard to the impact it would have upon the GC community.

The best sig is no sig.
