Hi – I posted the following in a GC.com forum awhile back, and got no response. Does anybody here have any input to share?
Thanks, Grandpa Jim

Hi –
I have been given a Magellan NAV 5000. It appears to be around a 1992 model. I have been unable to find much info about it, although the Magellan website has an online manual for a model which is similar, but newer. It seems to be in excellent condition, and I’d like to play around with it some.
Are there any websites dedicated to old GPS equipment?
Any info on this unit or leads to other sources will be much appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

This is probably the manual you’ve looked at. If if doesn’t help then contact Magellan direct.11/02/2006 at 11:07 am #1766655Thanks –
I’ve seen this manual you are referring to, and it’s close, although it is a newer and fancier model.
All Magellan told me was where to look on their website for old manuals. This particular model is not shown.
There are sites all over the Web for antique computers. Lots of information from collectors, online museums, etc. I’m hoping somebody might know of something similar for GPS’, although my searches have not turned up much.

11/02/2006 at 1:02 pm #1766656It looks like there are three different versions: 5000, 5000 DX, and 5000DLX. It isn’t a manual but has some help. Not sure what you are looking for in the manual, but this does have some tips.

11/02/2006 at 5:51 pm #1766657Don’t count on Magellans help much. Although I love their GPS’s, their customer service seems lacking at best.
I’ve e-mailed customer service 3 times, and called them twice, spending a total of almost an hour on the phone being bounced all over from department to department, and still don’t have a solution to my simple problem. All I want is to purchase a new window for my GPS, and they can’t seem to help. 2 months I’ve been waiting, and still no answers.
Well at least it’s still waterproof, even with a, inch and a half crack in it.
11/03/2006 at 1:33 am #1766658Well, I guess maybe I did pretty well with Magellan Customer Service. I had a response within a few days, although it just told me what I had already stated in my email to them. They were not any help, but they at least did reply.
11/04/2006 at 5:42 am #1766659I have a magellan nav 5000 dx, with the manual, and also a power adapter, and external antenna. Do you want a copy of the manual??
If you want to give me a call at 920-471-8008, we can discuss what you need.

I have used it for caching but it is big and bulky, and nowhere near as accurate as my garmin rino-120, but I am a nostalgic freak, so I think it is cool. It is also built like ma panzer tank…
11/04/2006 at 3:12 pm #1766660If possible, please post a pic of the GPSr. I’d love to see it.
11/05/2006 at 3:43 am #1766661I will post a pic when I get home tommorrow. I am sitting in the hotel room in Owatonna, MN. Will do though.
By the way, your Match-head cache is awesome. We found it back on the 7th of October, and it was a awesome experience.

11/05/2006 at 9:50 pm #1766662Thank you very much. That was one of the first caches I planted. I never thought it would get much attention because of it’s placement. Boy was I wrong! I’m glad that you enjoyed it. 😀
