I am thinking of trying out basic ham radio. I need to take my first test in Feb ( I hope). With the portable ham units I just wondered if anyone out there hams or hams with caching?

Well, I am a Ham radio Operator, as is Grousetails, KS9WI, KC9LUK (Rsplash40) And I know I am missing others.

Team Bear Bear is as well.

As for caching with ham radio’s, I joked with Korpl and ks9wi about it a while ago, running 2-3 teams(cars) and having operator in each to exchange logs, finds, schedule lunch runs, etc. But we never got past the chatter on email.

I haven’t heard of any one using radios during caching. There is a post or two on the national forums about it, mostly doing a call to see who is a ham.

There’s several morse code caches out, sort of ham related…

You can add Flushingrouse (KX9M) to the Ham list, and my son Timberdoodle (KC9ITP).

A few of us of have used 2 meter repeaters while at some of the events. Some locations have been fortunate to have repeater coverage.

I don’t usually bring the HT along, unless geocaching with a fellow ham, or unless I’m out of cell phone range.

Another ham here KC9DCE. I don’t carry an HT while caching as I have too much other stuff (swag/TB’s/etc) to carry.

Good luck on your test….make sure you take the free on-line practice tests, they really help!
