I had been looking to go here for some time now and I was wondering if anyone has been there. What is the best time of the year to go there? Also, has anyone seen the arua borialis when up there? I just want to know when I should plan this trip. Thanks

I was there when I was 5 years old. The only thing I remember is the little house we stayed in. We had to use a skeleton key to open the door. Also, my brothers both refused to go upstairs. Oh, yeah… and I made my dad go out to the car in a thunderstorm to get my little stuffed rabbit. Ah, the good old days. Hmmm… I might have to think about taking a trip up there again one of these days. 😀 Thanks for bringing back the memories.

You can save some money by taking the Ice Road from Bayfield to Madeline Island this time of year. The caches may be under some snow though. We haven’t cached there, but Ashland has some nice artesian wells, both traditional and Earthcaches. And the Northern Great Lakes Visitors Center is a nice stop year round!

We went sea kayaking there in late summer about five years ago and it was a great time. We were again up there this past October, which is spectacular. Right now, if you don’t have water access to get down by the lakeshore, you can hike around and see the sea caves, which are really worth seeing. There really aren’t any bad times, IMO. Think about what you want to experience there and choose that way. There will be more tourists in the summer, of course.

All over the Bayfield peninsula are wonderful caches in delightfully remote spots. There are still some we want to visit, notably Pratt’s Peak and Lost Falls. We tried for Pratt’s Peak last fall, but the “road” didn’t even look passable with ATVs. We’ll just plan a nice long hike next time!

Trekkin’s family still lives up that way, so we travel there fairly often. And yes, we’ve seen the Northern Lights. Fall and late summer have seemed best for that. I have to say, the most spectacular Northern Lights I’ve ever seen were in our front yard a few years ago, though. Kinda weird!

Being in my own back yard , I have only het just a few of the caches up that way. Lost Falls is on my to do list. Nothing but awsome logs for that one. I adopted Morgan Fall from Lil’ Otter. Another cool falls cache and Passing Wind has an EC near there all. One might want to PM him as he did/might/still live in Bayfield.(He had a job interview and might have moved thou and I have not seen or smelled or hide or hair of him.)
Twin Fall is suppose to be a very good cache and I have heard good things about Dead Man Chest(I think that’s what it’s called? 🙄 😕 )
Point Detour is the northern most cache in Wisconsin. It is in my top 5 caches if done. There is also a small little campground right near it. It is right on the Big Lake. The campground is either a private or owned by the county or town

FYI: The Aurora’s show up at any time of year. They’re caused by solar flares that can occur at any time. It’s hit or miss.

Mary and I spent a week kayaking, camping and B&Bing in the Apostles in August of 07. Depending on how some other things fall into place, we’re hoping to go back this summer. My blog entry for this trip is here:

There are a few caches on Madeline Island, plus a handful in Washburn, Bayfield, and further north to Little Sand Bay… Most aren’t difficult to get to, even with snow.
In fact, at the end of the month, i’ll be placing 2 more caches in the Mellen area when i go up for the Run on Water in Bayfield… it’s a 5 mile “road” race on the ice from Bayfield to Madeline Island and back

Resurrecting this moldy oldie….

We are considering a trip up here and the idea of kayaking and camping on one of the islands is appealing; however, we have regular open cockpit kayaks and not sea kayaks.

The mainland campgrounds look rather uninspired (open and crowded).

Any thoughts?

On the Left Side of the Road...

There is (was) a campground up west of Washburn, I believe. Big Rock Campground maybe? It had a big rock by the entrance! It’s not on the lake. The Ashland campground was nothing special to look at, but I saw it 4 years ago. One of the EC is there, I believe.

I’ve got a good memory. It’s just a little short!

There are 2 camp grounds M.I. One State and the other County or Privately owned. There is a campground just north of Washburn, (County???) My wife and I stopped there to take the dogs swimming a few years ago and my wife thought it was a place we could try out sometime. There is also a private or Tribe owned little camp ground right next to the Point Detour Cache. You ARE on top of WI at that place. And yes there is also Big Rock Campground. Nasty cache there too, 2 DNF’s for me. I have seem friends who live up there. I can see where they would recommend.

Either we are going to drag the camper up there and have some comfort and go yakking during the day, or go yakking and camp on the islands.

My concern with yakking is the possible lake conditions at any time, and the fact that we have open cockpit boats.

Having the camper is more flexible, but I don’t like open campgrounds when you are right on top of your neighbor listening to their radio and generator.
