Here’s an interesting opinion on this very subject by Jeremy, owner of Geocaching.com:
Jun5, 2007
“There are, as Markwell has written, many shades of grey. And as I often write, as long as the activity doesn’t get too abusive I would posit that it doesn’t matter too much if someone does multiple logs on a cache. After all the find counts don’t get you a prize. Besides you can always pooh pooh those who don’t log caches the right way even if they are more prolific finders than you are. The same goes for hard caches over easy caches, urban caches or hiking caches, etc.Markwell also put it well that I generally don’t make judgements on the shades of grey. I only step in when the activity becomes carcenogenic (or epidemic).
I’m of the opinion that anything below the “marks multiple finds for moving caches” is a no no. But my opinion has no bearing on the way the site should function in this area. Ultimately the cache owner decides. within reason, the parameters of the “find.”
…and…

“1700 logs by 30 users is a bit of an overkill, however. It would be hard to argue that this kind of logging crosses the line for abuse.”12/03/2007 at 3:13 pm #1881537Yep I recall reading those posts I believe there was a cool picture chart with that as well…..I still look to the day when this issue goes away.

That will happen when the purists stop asserting that multi-logging is not “ethical” even though it’s allowed, or when gc stops allowing it.
Immovable object, meet irresistible force…
On the Left Side of the Road...12/03/2007 at 9:49 pm #1881539wow, step away for the weekend, and see what happens to a simple post.
easy guys, this was just a post to say that i thought i was the only one deleting. when i first told people i was going to do it, they thought i was nuts. so it felt good to see that there were others that thought the same as i did.
i don’t care one way or the other about how anyone else logs temps.12/03/2007 at 10:01 pm #1881540“Ultimately the cache owner decides. within reason, the parameters of the “find.”
Exactly what I stated in my long comment earlier. The GC site should support this and in the end allow the cache owner to opt whether their cache (regardless of type) can be logged “Found It” more than once or not. Then all players abide by the same rules for that cache. Again, if they choose not to log something then they are silly.
I think the term “Purist” is a funny word. To the dictionary it means: “One who practices or urges strict correctness”. To me, what “Purist” means in many contexts is someone who is not willing to change for any reason even for the better.
Please consider the words of Dr. Spencer Johnston: “Get out of your comfort zone and adapt to change sooner. Take control, rather than let things happen to you.”

12/03/2007 at 10:51 pm #1881541Hi all,
Wow, this sure was a popular thread over the weekend…..Wow.
My personal opinion, and it is just that, a personal opinion, has already been stated by many folks: It’s your game, play it how you like.
Numbers can be fun, but I dont think that it is the REASON WHY we geocache. They are just a fun side part of the game.
With that being said, can we all go back to hiding tupperware in the woods like adults?

Would you like us to hide caches temporarily or permanently???
😆 😉

12/04/2007 at 1:14 am #1881544I’ve got a nice little park in mind for a mutli-cache. There’s about 20 trees with knotholes just perfect to hold filmstrip cans and, wouldn’t you know it, I have 20 cans right here. I’ll put a log scroll in each one and record them as 20 different waypoints in the cache listing. Most are just a few yards apart and, since I want people to find all the waypoints, I’ll keep the coords viewable on the cache page just to be sure. Since each can has a log I’ll allow people to log each waypoint as a find, whether they find 1 or 20.
The difference to the purists–besides permanence–is that this is published as a multi-cache and not an event. Of course, I could always archive my multi at any time…

In the words of Dr. Pepper: “I’m a pepper, your a pepper, he’s a pepper, she’s a pepper; wouldn’t you like to be a pepper too.”
12/04/2007 at 6:31 am #1881548When did this become a competition? How about we just play the game in a manner that we can live with as individuals and quit worrying about how the next guy is playing his game. I personally don’t log temps and I also don’t give a fat rats arse what you do with your temp caches as it doesn’t affect me one way or the other. Lets get real here . . . .,

Yep that’s the one. I originally got permission to re-post it here but never got around to it (and I didn’t want to start another of these threads). That chart is awesome….cracks me up…I’m a little on the dark side as it turns out.
