Today is the first day of high speed ferry service between Milwaukee and Muskegon. The cost is stiff ($85 human round trip, $118 car round trip, $15 bicycles).
But as a one time thing, the adventure may be worth $85. The number of caches within walking distance of the Muskegon dock is minimal (6). I don’t do bicycles, but that might be an option for some.
It would be kinda cool to monitor the cross lake trip on your GPSr too.
I also don’t believe that the opportunity to do this will exist a year from now.
06/01/2004 at 7:50 pm #1746936Do I smell an interesting cache placement coming up? Could be an expensive one, but interesting none the less…. hmmm…
06/01/2004 at 11:21 pm #1746937I am awaiting a call back regarding special rates for a group of us (WGA members) to go. I’ve always wanted to cache the one in Manitowoc, but this works even better.
I will post more when details become available.

The SS Badger, a non-taxpayer supported Carferry Service, has been running the Manitowoc Ludington Route for over 50 years now. The Badger, built in Wisconsin, accomodates 620 passengers, 180 automobiles, tour buses, R.V.s and semi-trucks. The SS Badger offers the largest cross-lake passenger-oriented service on the Great Lakes. A four hour 60-mile cruise takes passengers and their vehicles or bicycles across Lake Michigan between Ludington, Michigan and Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
The Prices are more reasonable and the Onboard Activities and Accomodations knock the pants off your high-speed, high-cost southern quality knockoff down there.
Oh, and, no there aren’t any caches within walking distance of the Ludington docks but there are at least a dozen or so caches within 15 miles of Ludington.
Sorry, but this is a sore spot for us up here. And yes, I do hope your fairy takes a one-way boat trip elsewhere in the near future.
A 10% Round Trip Discount on a Midnight sailing, a full day of caching on the oposite shore, a late or next day return trip, and a crapload of new caches in the Manitowoc area would certainly make for a fun Event Cache Weekend!
Just my $.02

Co-conspirators to make the world a better place…06/03/2004 at 6:12 am #1746939Funny. The idea for a long distance multi crossed my mind when I heard about this ferry. That is until I saw the prices! Especially since your car fee does not cover the driver! I don’t know how it will keep running with those high boarding rates!
I had thought of trying it to visit relatives in Michigan but it looks like I’ll end up going around the lake via Chicago and wonderful Gary, Indiana (armpit of the midwest). -
