I don’t see the point of souvenirs.
07/30/2013 at 10:24 pm #1971264Paul, nobody does.
I would not be surprised if Groundspeak eventually does away with them.

If you log a find in August and then delete it (so you can relog it for September to avoid the souvenir), you’ll still be “stuck” with the souvenir.
We found that out the hard way. We accidently logged a battleship find but used the wrong battleship cache – one in Vermont instead of WI. We deleted the erroneous log and resubmitted it for the WI version, but now still have a Vermont souvenir that we didn’t earn. ๐ก
On the bright side we know how to acquire a souvenir for all 50 states a la armchair. ๐
You can contact GS and ask to have the souvenir removed. They will kindly do that.
Hmm…..Might be an idea for these silly August ones…….
07/31/2013 at 10:58 am #1971266There are not nearly enough guard rails near me to collect all those. I’d have to move further north.
07/31/2013 at 3:14 pm #1971267Just saw the souvenirs here. For what it’s worth, they’re kinda cute.
07/31/2013 at 4:37 pm #1971268They are kinda cute. One half of our team says “meh,” but we’re a team, so we’ll give it the old college try, though I’m quite sure life will intervene at times. I am always surprised at how much controversy something so inconsequential engenders. I’d be thrilled if my biggest concern in life is whether or not these things have “value” or are “cheapened.” Kind of like the FTF game. It used to be a challenge to get them around here, especially without notification or a fancy phone, but with 400 or so appearing on nearby bike trails….the challenge is gone. For those who enjoy challenge caches, we’ve discovered souvenirs can have “value”. But like anything in life…..if it’s not one’s bag, they can be ignored. One half of our team would like to ignore the challenge attached to souvenirs, but again….we’re a team. ๐
I was surprised to hear groundspeak can remove them. On my first trip to CA getting caches, the souvenir never came, so I wrote to them to see if they could put it in. They tried, but it didn’t work. We got one on our second trip out. Go figure.
07/31/2013 at 5:05 pm #1971269You know what?
I never really look at my souvenir page. It wasn’t until the “31 Days in August” thingy came up that I looked at the page to see the two state souvenirs for MI and WI. Otherwise I don’t pay attention to that page.
So i’m gonna cache as I normally do, which is like a few times a month, usually at the spur of the moment.
So if I get a souvenir, I get a souvenir. If I don’t, I don’t. No biggie either way. Don’t matter to me.
08/01/2013 at 12:50 am #1971270A SQUIRREL ON THE 19TH!!!!
That might be my goal.
08/01/2013 at 1:41 am #1971271I’m part of the current 19% of the “hooey” vote. What’s to prevent someone from going out on the 1st of August, grabbing 31 p & g’s, and logging one a day for the month of August just to say they got all the souvenirs ๐
Oconto...the birthplace of western civilization:)
08/01/2013 at 10:27 am #1971272Crap!
08/01/2013 at 10:28 am #1971273Right up there with challenges.
08/01/2013 at 1:25 pm #1971274We certainly will go after some caches in August, but not with the goal of getting one every day. Been there, done that, even without the worthy cute little prize posted someplace on our profile. We still have not gotten them for some other places we’ve found caches, and we’re not too upset. It’s just not a big deal in our minds – kinda fun to look at occasionally, but not very often. And certainly nobody else gives a hoot how many we have!

08/01/2013 at 2:08 pm #1971275I think it dilutes the whole concept of souvenirs unless they’re going to group them or something on the stats page for this. It irritates me to the point I don’t want to cache because I don’t want them in my list. It ranks right up there with the “challenge” idea they had a while ago which was just plain silly.
08/01/2013 at 4:47 pm #1971276Got my first one today and didn’t even realize it.
I’m in the “meh” category.08/01/2013 at 7:46 pm #1971277Or another poll question could have been:
“Would you find a cache just to get a particular souvenir?”
Like the bike token (7th) or the fish (27th) look like fun ones.
Who knows?
Heck even a palm tree with the airplane (2nd) might be interesting to ‘collect’.
Don’t see a big need for doing 31 days of consecutive
caching for the sake of it all.Been there, done that. Ditto.
Now, if the folks in Seattle gave out a free one-year premium membership for those doing the streak that might be a different story.
Or maybe a $$$ voucher like that MLB team in Beer Towne………… ๐ ๐ Now there is irritation!
Ca$h on!
