How come, if the season following the Autumnal Equinox is known as “Autumn,” the season following the Vernal Equinox isn’t known as “Vern?”

Because it would sound funny to say “vern ahead”? 😆
The names Autumnal and Vernal are based on the original Latin terms.
We’ve kept the name Autumn but more commonly call the season Fall. Vernal is still an english word meaning related to spring.
So in England, would having spring fever be referred to as having some sort of vernal disease?
In this country, an uncommonly used term for an allergic flare associated with the new spring pollens (primarily trees) is vernal catarrh.
