Cache pages are showing mapquest maps again instead of the google maps. Anyone know why they switched back? I personally liked the google maps.

I believe it was because some people (dial-up) the maps wouldn’t display quickly or even at all. from what I read it sounded like most people wanted a really quick site, not fancy maps.

I really liked the new maps too, good thing you still can use them…..

We’re sad they took away the google maps also. You can still view them, though, by clicking ‘Google maps’ to the left of the map. It won’t show on the cache page, but you can see it in another screen.

That’s odd. I still have the Google maps when I’m in reviewer mode, so I hadn’t noticed that they went back to MapQuest.

I actually prefer Mapquest maps. I like the Google satellite photos when they are detailed, but most of the county doesnt have good resolution yet.

Personally, I usually don’t even glance at the maps on the cache pages. If I want to see a map of the cache area, I’ll click on one of the map links instead.

There was some trouble when they were first implemented as well, where Safari users were only seeing a grey square where the map should be.

It would be nice if they would at least put a link up for the google maps showing all the nearby caches. It was also nice to be able to zoom/pan map without opening another page.
I really could care less about the google maps link that just shows the cache which I’m looking at, if thats all I get I would rather use mapquest.

There has been 10+ topics on gc.com forum about this same thing, the majority of people would like to see a setting that each user could choose the maps they want, hopefully this is possible.

ALSO: This is slightly off topic but I have always had one major issue with the mapquest maps & newly listed caches. the maps basically take forever to load on any cache that has just been listed, but usually clears up after a few people find it/a few days. I get this on both my pc’s, on 3mb internet.

If you click on the “View GC.com Maps” link to the left, the page you’ll get to has a link to “View Google Maps (beta)”.

When a cache is first listed, the site links to a Tiger Maps image for the page, which sometimes takes forever to load. The page is put into a queue to have a MapQuest map generated, but it make take several hours or more for that to happen. If you edit the cache page, the Tiger map returns and the page is put into the queue again.

thank you for letting me know how to get to the google maps beta, I never use the gc.com maps so I would have never found it.

also thanks for letting me know why the maps seemed so slow when caches are first listed. this was something I always wondered about.

Thanks for the info on the Beta link. I like those maps and hope the link stays. 🙂
