The head of the citizens group that oversees preservation efforts in the Bairds Creek Parkway in the Green Bay area has approached me to see if there would be interest among members of WGA in assisting their group to map trails within the parkway. The parkway encompasses a very large area, and contains a number of the best geocaches in the area.
Over the years, trails have migrated, and new trails have developed, but there exists no comprehensive map of the trail system. In order to help preserve the area, as well as generate funds to increase the parkway, the conservation group would like our assistance to map trails.
They would like to do the mapping sometime this fall, perhaps in October.
Could this be combined with an event, or done as a service project by the WGA? It could go a long ways to give the WGA a positive image in this area. What are your thoughts. Could the Board of Directors discuss this?

Sounds like an excellent idea.
Are you, or someone else in the GB area willing to head this up, with WGA support?

07/17/2008 at 5:24 pm #1892361I would be willing to help out with this project, but I don’t have the time to head it up.
07/17/2008 at 6:04 pm #1892362We would be willing to help with this…
It sounds like the association has an idea of what it wants to do and is looking for warm bodies to do some field work? In other words, they are heading it up?

Even if they do head it up, we would likely do better if we had a local GB person designated as the contact person and someone who would take the lead within the WGA.

07/17/2008 at 6:53 pm #1892364I’ll help.
07/17/2008 at 9:01 pm #1892365I think the association is looking to perhaps pair a geocacher with one of their volunteers to facilitate the mapping. I’ve know that trails were mapped at Rock Island this summer, but I don’t have any experience in doing that. I would be happy to be the go-between for WGA on this project. It is great to see such a positive quick response from people.

Thanks Frizz. The BOD will vote on whether we want to support this, but that should be just a formality. I think this sounds like a great project.

11/19/2008 at 3:27 am #1892369Anybody who would like to help out with some mappping of areas of the Bairds Creek Parkway is invited to meet at 9am this Sunday morning at Christa McCullif park in Green Bay, to map some of the trails east of the park. This will be in the area of A Little Piece of Wilderness Loop (GCGVW1). It would be nice to have about 6-8 volunteers to help with the project. I expect tp spend about 3-4 hours mapping the trails. There will be some reresentatives from the Bairds Creek Preservation group at the park.
If you are interested, please send me a PM or post in this forum.

Yes, November 23. This project got a little behind schedule, and scheduling around holiday celebrations and Packer games is difficult.
