I posted this today at the Muskie Mayhem page, but thought I would repeat it here for those of you who may be interested:
This was memborable, for a couple of reasons. First of all, we drove to this one directly from sbukosky’s Motorcycle Road in Monches virtual cache. Our route took us south on Hwy 83 through North Lake Saturday afternoon — a scenic but uneventful drive. (More about that in a moment). We arrived at the coordinates and enjoyed seeing the big muskies in the water. Some of them appeared to be between 3 and 4 feet long. From there we decided to walk down the road to the microcache coordinates. It took a bit of looking around, but we were finally able to find it and log our find. During our walk back I noticed the Channel 4 helicopter in the sky, but didn’t think much about it. Then we were off to the next cache. This morning when I looked at the Sunday Journal Sentinel I saw a photo of a drain derailment that destroyed part of a bridge in North Lake. See the on-line story of the accident here: http://www.jsonline.com/news/wauk/may02/41088.asp
Huge chunks of concrete, timber, and 3 train wheels fell to the road at the bridge. The time of the accident was listed as 3:36 p.m. Saturday. Hmm, didn’t we drive under that bridge at about that time? Doing some investigating with my GPS track log and MapSource (see screen print of map and track log) I determined we drove under the very same railroad bridge at precisely 3:30:02 p.m., missing the derailment by just 6 minutes! Amazing.
