Barron County Geocaching Class

There is a three part geocaching class coming up really quick here in Barron County. The classes take place on May 18th, May 25th, and June 1st from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at UW Barron COunty in the Student Center (room 402)

Taught by a geocacher from Chippewa Falls (I’m not sure who, as my info listed her real name as opposed to her geocaching handle…),

The class description says “Feed the adventurer in you! Join the class and explore the family friendly outdoor activity of geocaching. In this class participants will
receive a brief history about GPS technology and how to use basic GPS unit functions. Participants will then become familiar with setting up a cashe and navigating geocaching websites. During the final session, participants will venture out to find a real cache located in the Rice Lake area. Participants will need to provide their own GPS system, however there will be a few GPS units to barrow for the class.”

Registration fees are $15 for individuals and $25 for families and there was a huge article in the local paper about geocaching, so hopefully we’ll get some new and ambitious cachers up north here!

Julie (LouMag) is my geo-child. Our kids were in Destination Imagination together and when we had time to kill in Stevens Point last year during the DI tournament I, of course, went geocaching. She came along, got hooked and taught geocaching at the Chippewa Falls Middle School this year in an after-school program. When UW-Barron contacted me this winter about this class, I passed it on to someone who can actually teach. I’m sure she’ll run a great class.
