Having to drive in IL every day, I can say that it is “those kinds of bears” that I would often love to use the bear spray on.
01/01/2005 at 8:55 pm #1748267In the short time that we have been geocaching we have crossed paths with bears and/or bear sign several times. Three times while we were in the vehicle going to or leaving caches. Once on the trail between the cache and our vehicle. A few other times we have run across fresh tracks; one set included a young one. We almost stepped in some very fresh dung on another adventure. All of these sightings were within 40 miles of Eagle River, where it is pretty common area to see bear. We live in town and have had bear nearly every year pass through. We do carry bear pepper spray, but have never had to use it.
Timberline Echoes01/04/2005 at 5:24 am #1748268Thanks to this thread we came up with an idea for my son’s safety poster for his Geocaching Project in 4-H. “Carry pepper spray to keep the bears away”.
(Another idea was, “If you’re allergic to bees, stay away from rotted trees.” He’s allergic to yellow-jackets.)
Thanks. – Ruth

Updated: Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005 – 9:53 PMFAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – Someone is putting the scare into people walking trails at Creamer’s Field in Fairbanks by laying down bogus bear tracks.
“It’s either a person or a circus bear with two left front feet walking on its hands,” said state wildlife biologist Harry Reynolds. “There are no hind tracks.”
The tracks feature a foot pad, toes and claws that stretch out 3 inches from the toes. Reynolds said it’s either a boot or some little attachment someone is putting on a boot.

So what do you say for the last one? …
“If you see a yellow-jacket, take a rock and try to smack it!”01/07/2005 at 10:35 pm #1748271I’ve seen a bear or two while geocaching ‘upnorth’.. and around the Armstrong Creek (NE’ern WI) area.. driving on a logging road.. I saw a black puma.. thought it was a bear til it lept into the bush and I saw a long…balancing tail
What a thrill.. so I stopped in to the first ‘local’ joint I could find and asked them about such sitings.. very rare but a few other locals were lucky enough to see it too.
Now.. to see an eagle in flight just takes my breath away..
