Benchmark Hunting

Since we are on benchmarks I found two the other day that are not listed on GC. We were doing the Match Head cache at the Racine Breakwater and on our way to the cache, once we started on the concrete portion of the breakwater we found them both, each about .10 miles from one another. Cant claim them as fnds but has anybody else discovered an unlisted benchmark? Or do you know how to get tehm listed so that they can be claimed?

GC.com only pulled the NGS records up to 1999 or something like that so not every benchmark will be in the GC.com database. And GC.com is not updating thir database nor has any intention to do si in the future.

So unlisted BM can be logged as waymarks. But I don’t know how that works.

I’ve listed a few on waymarking.com, it’s not all that difficult. It’s even easier if you are just logging a find that someone else has listed though. 😉

The requirements for listing a Benchmark are listed on this link below. Basically you just fill out a few questions, post coordinates, and upload some photos. If you decide to list a benchmark on waymarking.com just look at a few of the other bechmarks that are posted to get an idea of what information you need to include.

Almost sounds like reporting a BM recovery to the NGS! But not quite as technical. 😉

Kinda didnt think about the camera when getting to the cache we were doing..was a little more concerned of falling on the breakwater and breaking something, like a bone

Okay, so a year and a half after the previous post. But hey, I’m new the BM hobby and wanted to give my two cents 🙂

I’ve recently found two benchmark disks that were dated 1930. Both of them were in railroad bridge footings in Oshkosh.

Update: found an older benchmark. This one is a pipe cap.

This benchmark was monumented in 1908, last recovered in 1989, not found in 2005.

Nicely done!! How’d ya do submitting the recovery report? Dot all your I’s and crossed youe T’s? And written it up in the correct format? Yeah, I’m sure ya did!

We stopped submitting the reports. Probably should have kept at it as we made some nice recoveries like yours posted above.

I’m pretty sure I did it correctly. Here is what I sumbitted:

The benchmark is located 21 feet South of center line of County Line Rd/E Lone Elm Rd, 30 feet West of Western most rail on Western most set of tracks, 3 feet Northwest of power pole number 1617 6E7, and 2.5 feet North of an orange plastic witness post.

I tried to follow the format of the original post that describes the location. On a side note, the triangle in the middle has a plus sign, not just a dot. What could that stand for? What sort of station does that make this?

I’m thinking the center of the cross serves the same purpose as the dot – the place to put the surveying tool as it should be the center of the station.
