Hi there folks,
I was hoping you could give me some info about bison tubes.I purchased and placed some last winter. They looked fine. They have an o-ring (rubber or rubber-like) which seemed to be behaving well in the cold, which I figured would be “the weak link”. So I assumed they’d be water-tight. But I replaced one after the o-ring disappeared and just had word another bison now has a soaked log. They have not been opened often either.
So, is this par for the course with bison tubes or did I purchase inferior ones? I’d appreciate hearing your experiences.
I got these at geocachingstuff.tripod.com.
Thanks for any info,

08/23/2010 at 2:07 am #1934788I say replace them all with the 50 cal boxes they usually have a tighter seal.

08/24/2010 at 1:22 am #1934790The O rings that come with them fit way to loose and fall off easily. Go to the hardware store and get a tighter fitting O ring in the plumbing supply. The kind that people used to use to fix their faucets with. There all cartarges now LOL
08/24/2010 at 1:29 am #1934791I recommend castration rings; go to the livestock section of Fleet Farm. Little green rubber bands, buy a whole bag of them for cheap. They hold up very well to the elements. Don’t ask how I know this.

08/24/2010 at 1:46 am #1934794Itty bitty American Bison?
08/24/2010 at 1:21 pm #1934795Looks like I’m in for a very entertaining trip to Fleet Farm!
(As I’ve heard, “If they ain’t got it at Fleet Farm, you don’t need it.”)
But the itty bitty bison comment is right on the mark… I need castration rings for hamsters?

08/24/2010 at 1:41 pm #1934797Who’d have seen this thread going this direction? Should have a beverage warning on gr’s post….as in, you might spatter your screen from laughing! 🙄
08/24/2010 at 1:43 pm #1934798Ever seen that episode of Dirty Jobs?? This thread reminded me of that…
Not that I want to discuss it as it’s the grossest TV footage I think I’ve ever seen… Yep I’m a city slicker.
08/24/2010 at 4:11 pm #1934799Tighter rings will help a lot, but also soak them in oil or WD-40 overnight before using them. This will keep the elements out of the rubber much longer. You can also go to a cycle shop and buy synthetic rubber that will last much longer in the elements.
