I’m trying to figure out if they have an original use; in other words, if I wanted to buy some locally, where would I look? TIA

The manufacturer of the tubes has them listed in the “keychain accessories” category on their website (Bison Designs). It sound like they expect people to put them on their keychain and use them to store stuff (microfilm, poison suicide pill, maybe a tracking device? :))
Use this capsule as the container for your survival kit, there’s even more room than before.
Note sure who would have “keychain accessories” like this… maybe a hardware store or locksmith shop? You can always get the waterproof match containers (plastic and metal) at a hardware or outdoors store, but it sounds like you want something smaller…
08/23/2007 at 7:57 pm #1878383There are generally available in the pharmacy section of stores like Wally-world and K-fart. I know for sure they have them at Walgreen$, but I hate to send any business their way. They are also double the price or more there (like everything else).

Go to the store area and check out the battery holders. I have one and its the greatest thing since beer.

Thanks for that link, I got a battery holder and a stencil!
08/23/2007 at 10:01 pm #1878386I have a theory where the term Bison Tubes comes from … but I didn’t even bother googling it, as I like to just be right without checking …
I know for cows they make (or use to) these giant magnets, shaped similar to the Bison Tubes … you put them in a long tube a blew them down the throat of the cow … it would catch stray metal they swallowed (old nails, etc.) so they wouldn’t be floating around in their stomachs and causing damage. Maybe a similar/same product was (is) used for Bison … and inspired them to make this shape and size, and thus the name.

08/24/2007 at 12:46 am #1878389EnergySaver, That idea makes sense. Though I’ve lived in cow-rich areas most of my life, I only recently learned about that. I think one of my students was telling the class about it or something.
Someone else told me the nano containers are for nitro pills, so I guess it makes sense that these would just hold more of them. I just placed my first new cache, but I want one of these for one of the others. There will be quite a few when all is said and done.
Get your bikes tuned up. That’s all I’m saying! 😉
08/24/2007 at 3:23 am #1878390$2 or $3 at Shopko in the pharmacy… come in a variety of colors too.
TE08/24/2007 at 2:39 pm #1878391Darn I see I’m wrong.
Maybe it’s a combined answer … maybe they’re for heart pills for bison!09/03/2007 at 1:47 pm #1878392I have also seen them in larger chain gas stations like Kwik Tripp, etc. Those are usually sold with colored designs on them, however. I did see one once that was camo and could kick myself in hineder for not buying it at the time 🙄 I think the most frequent use of them is for storing of Nitro pills, as I have seen quite a few folks come into the ER with them.
09/03/2007 at 3:12 pm #1878393I found the ones at our Shopko, but they were larger and not the little metal ones I’ve seen. We traded for a Walgreens gift card in a cache the other day, hoping we could use it to buy them at high Walgreens prices, LOL.
