What are some of the 2016 issues and challenges facing the incoming Board Members for the WGA?

    How to stay relevant.

While the book of Faces continues to offer almost immediate responses to questions via Wall Posts and Facebook Messenger, I see the draw to the quick and witty conversations where the masses gather. The struggle as I see it is it is mostly watercooler conservations.

Facebook does not allow for easy review of topics/posts from a day or more ago. How difficult would it be to constantly be trying to reinvent the wheel when the Association would want to check for historical responses or even try to remember what we talked bout as a group last week?

The constant tug to remain relevant goes much deeper that social media interactions. We, the WGA members, have a couple set events in place that all look forward to but where would be be if we constantly only had a Fall Picnic and a Spring Campout? Bored…that is what we would be.

We need to keep trying new things in events: GIFF event, working with the Lilypad to host a recognition of 1 of the best Beginner Caches in the U.S.A. (What the Cluck!)

We need to take a chance on new ideas or ideas that just didn’t pan out in previous years (WGA State Park Series).

We need to continue to listen to the Members- keep taking the events to them in all parts of the state irregardless of the needs of the BOD.

We need to change up the WGA merchandise. Without the sales, the WGA has no money to do anything.

So, to wrap it up we need to never stop.

Never stop trying, never stop thinking about the members, never stop getting you all involved, never stop giving opportunities to help with the events to give you all a chance to see if a future BOD election could be in your future.

    Following the signals from space.

It is a great question and this is the time of year when the standing board members get excited as there is a potential for several new sets of eyes and hands to join in and offer up ideas that we may not have thought about. WA makes the point that we have to take chances sometimes, and while that is accurate, as directors we also need to look at the whole picture when making the decisions that we move on, and we need to be ready to accept the praise or take the criticism.
New and exciting, that’s the goal
    never a dull moment.

After much thought about this, all roads lead back to “staying relevant” as Walking Adventure stated.
The WGA needs to add value to the geocaching community. Helping in conservation like CITO’s or adding new challenges or games. To best portray this, why not share what we are offering today. This is the letter I keep current and send out to new member when they join. Here is what we have and can build upon to stay relevant in the geocaching community.

Forgive the formatting it is in Rich text and does not paste well..

Hello. Welcome to the Wisconsin Geocaching Association.

This is a Team Northwoods generated email not an automatic computer generated email. I am 1 of 9 elected volunteer board members of the WGA. I am also the chairman of the Membership Committee, therefore I email new members giving them a “little” information about what the WGA offers. The WGA consists of over 650 members.

The WGA is an all-volunteer geocaching organization: members, board members, committee members and geocachers that step up at events and in the geocaching community. There are no fees to be a member of the WGA. We have all come together to make Wisconsin a great place for us to play.

Make sure you verified your email address to become a full WGA Member. Adding your location to the profile is not required but it is nice to see the diversity of our group on the member map. You do not need to use your exact address just city and state, otherwise you can use coordinates.

Being part of the WGA will give you access to our members forum. If you have any questions or are looking for information this is a great place to start. In the forums you will also find a New Members Forum to introduce yourself; if you like at:

    Upcoming WGA Events

The WGA holds events all around the state bringing members together for caching, socializing and conservation.

This year’s Spring Campout will be held on May 13 – 15th at the South Kettle Moraine State Park. Group camping will be available at the Pinewoods Group Campsites. More information to come. If you are interested in volunteering on the Spring Campout Committee please let me know.

The 7th Annual WGA Chili Feed – Identical Snowflakes was on January 16, 2016. Please follow this link for more information. GC67ZNY

I feel like Chris, Pete and Michael have really summed things up nicely and it’s hard for me to say much more than this.  One thing that would really be important is to have all board members pitch in to divide up the duties.  Not everyone is suited to every job so if people can volunteer in areas they feel comfortable in and all put in an effort, things run much more smoothly.
