Im planning on doing a little temp hide cache day at our local school for my son’s den and was looking for any ideas. I thought I could do like 6 hides and send 2-3 out to each cache, then rotate the groups around. We have fairly large area to work with. I guess what Im looking for is any ideas to put a little twist with the finds. A puzzle of some sort? The boys are in the 8-9 year old range. Any ideas would be great.

    Thanks

    Sounds like fun!

Personally, I would do the following, but it’s just my taste …

    (1) Have each cache have some sort of minor “educational value”, maybe each container could have some little fact about scouting on it.

    (2) If you have more adult assistance/volunteers than space, consider breaking the kids up and sending each group in different order/direction. What I mean is: If you caches are named “A”, “B”, “C” and “D” … have some kids hunt them in that order then have other groups hunt them as “D”, “C”, “B”, “A”. Same caches, just 2 different versions of the piece of paper you hand them. This way they will not be falling each other around, but instead “cross paths” just one time.

You can also have them hunt for a cache using the traditional method of a compass. This way they can utilize what they already know (should know) and compare it to the utilizing a GPS unit and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each.

    Hope all goes well.

natloh is involved with Scouting and helped put together a hunt in Feb. A bunch of us went and helped him w/ that. Contact him and see if he can be of any assistance.

I may be too late to help here but on the chance you’re still planning. My son’s in scouting too and last fall at a campout we set out a few “meteorites” (a rubber ball wrapped in tinfoil). We placed them in out of the way spots but near enough to trails that a flashlight would pick up on them and sent kids out in small groups during the evening campfire with the GPS to find the fake meteorites (we had one adult follow each group so we didn’t lose any kids). The kids thought it was fun.

He’s going to a campout next month and is planning on doing a more organized course as a leadership project. When I read about the in the dark caches using the little reflector pins (that I used to use to find my bowhunting stands in the early morning dark before I got a GPS) as part of a night course I realized that kids would think that would be the greatest.

    Good luck!
