You know we all have ’em–those geocaching goals. Some we can even attain. We’re saving the final for zuma’s birthday for our 700th. We did all 50 of ’em! Others complete the Delorme, become earthcache masters, and on and on.
Someone please talk Trekkin’ out of the futility of trying to get everything in our 50 mile radius. For one thing, the floods have rendered a whole area unreachable now till next spring, probably. Since I logged on to log today’s finds, two new ones have popped up. (That’s a good problem, right?) We went from 35 left to 37 in 15 minutes!
10/07/2007 at 4:26 am #1879750Hi,
Congrats on getting all of the Zuma Miles Caches. I hope ya had as much fun as I did finding em.
As far as brass ring goals, I too think that it adds a little extra flavor to the fun of cachin to have a variety of goals. My main goal is always to have fun, explore new places, and learn about new places and people.
So any other goal, brass or otherwise is always secondary.
But, like you guys, I once had the goal of caching out a 50 mile radius. I got it down to 11 caches, and was pretty close, but there was one 48 miles away that I could not get (Bottoms Up, a zoejam cache high on an abandoned iron bridge.) And then when one came out right in town 50 feet up a tree, I realized that goal could never be accomplished.
I guess the WI Delorme was a challenge for awhile, and I had a blast doing it. And then there was the Iowa Delorme. And I am planning on doing the IL Delorme this winter. I know that there is one team who has done about 13 Delorme challenges already, so I will keep working on other state’s Delormes, but have no hopes of doing the most DeLormes.
I guess the one stat that I am having the most fun with right now is FTFs. Everybody likes the extra challenge of a FTF, a bonus pleasure that I did not get into until about a year and a half ago. Right now, I am at 444 FTFs, which I believe puts me 2nd in the world behind chuy!, who last I looked had 565 FTFs and is the world FTF leader.
I got 1 FTF today, but screwed up a good chance for a second FTF by using up all the daylight going after The End of the Trail by Lagrac. I thought it was going to be a 30 minute walk, and it ended up taking me about 3 hours. My own fault for tackling it without looking at a map before heading out, cuz there were easier ways to get it than the way I did it. But I accomplished my first goal: I had fun.

10/07/2007 at 5:31 am #1879751Trying to get every cache within 50 miles is FUTILE – don’t do it!!!! (There. Did that work? 😈 )
I too really enjoy the “brass ring” type goals. I am currently working on the WI DeLorme and county challenges as well as working my way up the Earthcache Master ladder. And when The Caching Place has quest games, my goal becomes to complete that to the best of my ability as quickly as possible. I guess I like challenges where I have to puzzle out which caches will best help me achieve my goals – it adds an extra element to the fun for me.
I’ve never even bothered to try to cache out a 50 mile radius from my house – I live too close to the greater Milwaukee area. 😯
10/07/2007 at 8:29 am #1879752have it shaven down to like 20miles or something, like right now i have a 20 mile radius cleaned out! and i’m not planning on cleaning out any farther then that, cuz of the wonderful fox valley people.. who like to make sure a new cache is published every day!
And don’t be sad if you don’t get your goal, i had a goal set to reach 1000 by my birthday(which is this thursday), but as of right now.. that ain’t happening.. too many things have popped up and has cut down my geocaching time and money.. so i just extended my goal to reach by the end of October.. just before i leave for Ohio for vacition..
10/07/2007 at 1:33 pm #1879753I have two goals:
I would like to get into and stay in the top 50 in terms of “Wisconsin’s Rankings for Geocachers.” Not sure why, it’s kind of a lame goal. Being a numbers guy isn’t all bad as it does bring me to awesome places along the way.
I would like to place only good caches which people will enjoy doing. Right now I’m doing this by creating what I hope are Cool Earth caches.
10/08/2007 at 1:32 am #1879754I’m in it for the adventure, too. We did lagrac’s most excellent earthcache in Forestville today, my kind of cache. Have to laugh at this ridiculous 50 mile goal, however. We were out today and had it down to 31. A little while ago, lizs had a series of 4 come up, RIGHT WHERE WE WERE CACHING today! Canoe caches, wahoo. I am trying to convince Trekkin’ that we can just spring to rent canoes for this series. Although we own two canoes and a kayak, at the moment, we don’t have the towers available for our new vehicle to transport them.
I kind of sort of had a goal to do all the canoe caches in Wisconsin and our 50. We’ve got a long way to go!
Trekkin’ seems to have also caught Ralph’s FTF disease. I think there might be a 12 Step Program for that one! 🙄
10/08/2007 at 3:41 pm #1879755Been down to 5 or 6 in our 50 mile for quite some time. I know one must be done in winter when the ground is frozen… not sure what the other reasons are but will ask Mr. TE and find out.
TE10/08/2007 at 5:20 pm #1879756We keep telling ourselves it’s not about the numbers, but at the end of the caching day, we’re fooling nobody but ourselves. It’s all about the numbers.
We just achieved two of our caching goals yesterday: to find 10 puzzle caches in one day and to hit 50 puzzle caches found at our 300 milestone. To be honest, even though it was rewarding to achieve the goal, it required a lot more planning and exertion than when we just randomly pick a starting spot and see how the day takes us. I’d say we’re going to lay low on reaching for another brass ring for awhile, but again, we’d only be fooling ourselves.
I have to say, I don’t think we would aspire to find everything in a 50-mile radius. Of course, we’re not close to that even being a possibility yet. But, it sure is nice when the stars align in such a way that we both get out of work early enough to enjoy some daylight and hit some caches that are near home.
10/10/2007 at 1:01 am #1879757Caching goals? The next huge goals that I’d like to accomplish is to finish the Iowa Delorme Challenge. I’d like to become a platinum Earthcache Master, and I’d like to take a road trip to Indiana to do the FuFu Earthcache run. That’s not aiming to high is it? Oh yeah, I’d like to fit my 2000th find in there somewhere too 😀 .
