We have received a request from the family of Bugsmasher69 to have someone take over his caches. There are currently 42 active caches in his account. While it is probably not reasonable for someone to adopt all of them, what I would like to see is for someone to agree temporarily take custody of the cache, and then offer the remainder out to the rest of the community. Note that these caches are generally located in Central Wisconsin, near Portage. Also, be aware that this project will probably take a bit of effort to manage the adoption effort, but you will not be obligated to keep active any caches that no one else wants to adopt.
11/22/2013 at 1:41 pm #1973260Great idea on the way to handle this situation Dave. Too far from us to help out. but a nice tribute to a popular hider.
11/22/2013 at 2:36 pm #1973261Deejay, do we let you know or do we contact Bugsmasher’s family? I see that his son has access to his account. We can definitely adopt some of his caches, and if a temporary “guardian” of all the caches is preferable, we can take over that responsibility.
As we said elsewhere, we never met Bugsmasher, but we communicated with him from time to time, and his caches were a big part of our early caching experience.

Sloughfoot will take on the project, Bugsmasher69 was a good friend of ours. There are a few over 40mi from our location and we would either adopt those to other cachers or archive them. Most of the caches seem to be in good shape so it doesn’t look like a lot of maint. required.
Either move them to our account or send the adoption requests and we will take it from there.
John11/25/2013 at 4:49 pm #1973263Great, John. I will have everyone contact you. Let’s try to get this wrapped up by December 7. Can you also send an email to the account to attempt to communicate with the family and let them know how this is progressing?
For everyone else, please contact Sloughfoot if you would like to participate in the project. If we can just put together a spreadsheet with the GC Code and handle of the person adopting, I can send that to GS and they will process. Note that if there are any listings that no one wants, we will just leave them in the field until they need maintenance as per the standard archiving process.

To keep it simple why don’t you just move all of the active caches to my account and then I will redistribute them. I already have a list from sandlanders and kungfuhippie of caches that they are interested in adopting.
John11/25/2013 at 5:13 pm #1973265I sent an email to bugsmasher69 account and also to his son’s account (Lazy139) of what we were wanting to accomplish.
John11/25/2013 at 5:24 pm #1973266I have received an email back from lazy139 (Dave’s son) and he is in agreement with us adopting the caches and then spreading them out to other interested cachers. He was going to forward my email on to Geocaching.com.
I think we are all in agreement but we just need someone with the power to make it happen to make it happen.
We can be reached either through the WGA web site or through GC.com or directly at [email protected]
John11/25/2013 at 5:30 pm #1973267OK, sounds good. I will contact the volunteers team and start the process.
11/26/2013 at 3:26 am #1973268Hats off to team Sloughfoot.
11/27/2013 at 1:55 am #1973269We have received 43 ( all of the active ones) of Bugsmasher69 caches into our account. I will be sending out some adoption requests to Sandlanders and Kungfuhippie for the caches that they requessted.
11/27/2013 at 3:15 am #1973270Eleven Bugsmasher69 caches just adopted by us. Thank you, Team Sloughfoot, for taking on this task in memory of our fellow central Wisconsin geocacher.
