So there is this really pretty cemetery just about a mile from my house. It is kept in great condition, lots of interesting features and as it sits on the top of a hill it gives a great view of Waukesha. I figured this was a perfect spot for a WSQ. So I called the manager of the cemetery to obtain permission and as soon as I started describing geocaching he interrupted me and told me he wanted nothing to do with that. He said it was nothing but trouble. Apparently people had hidden caches in people’s urns and in another destructive place. I tried to tell him that I was hoping for a tree on the outside of the property or some other spot that wouldn’t be damaging or disrespectful to the deceased but he didn’t want to hear any of it.
I just thought that this was a real shame and a good reminder about being careful and respectful when we place or go hunting for caches.

02/16/2011 at 9:20 pm #1943074That’s a shame. I love cemetery caches. Few muggles around, beautiful and peaceful, located in urban and rural areas, and the very setting reminds me of what’s important in life. We have a cemetery 2 blocks from us without a cache (so far); we’re planning on planting a cache there on the outskirts of the cemetery – if we get permission.
I’m wondering – do any of you more experienced cachers out there have a form letter or script you use when contacting cemeteries for permission?

02/17/2011 at 12:50 am #1943076You could always follow JimandLinda’s footsteps and make a mystery cache. You could lead them from one marker to another collecting information and have the final container either on the edge of the property or down the street by a stop sign or something. I have had to do that on more than 1 occaion. I have 3 war patriot caches that way. One cemetery would not allow caches either but I led them to the historical marker then do a math puzzle. There are many ways to still use the cemetery and not harm anything. Use your imagination, your an earth cache master right.

Or is it only the final location that counts? I haven’t actually created any caches with waypoints other than parking yet so I guess I don’t know all of the rules. But I will look into it. Thanks!

02/17/2011 at 4:16 am #1943078You would not need permission to use the cemetery for a virtual first waypoint to create a puzzle. The location of the final would determine whether permission would be needed. With any cache regardless of where it is located you should try to secure permission for all waypoints if possible.
