It really is too bad that Jeremy Irish has to be so silly about others he considers threats to geocaching and blocked access to the information that Buxley Maps needs to keep updated.
I think most of us have used Buxleys free maps for some time and now he has been locked out of access to geocaching.com.
From what I have read Jeremy has had a running feud with many of the early geocachers and has never allowed a link to Buxleys Maps on Geocaching.com.It is too bad that such a great activity has to have personalities effect those who are having such a great time with it.
We all read about the geocaching alternatives out there and know that they just do not match up to what we are looking for at this time.
The Buxley maps were very helpful and geocaching.com needs to recognize that and get over whatever feud they have going and remember that the reason they are successful is “we” geocachers who use these tools.

09/18/2004 at 2:35 am #1747662That’s the first I heard of this and it does indeed suck! I find it a very handy tool to find caches in the general area of the state I am going to at least and work from there.
09/18/2004 at 3:25 am #1747663Careful folks – there are always two sides to every story. Before we start throwing around words like “anal” let’s make sure we get all the facts first. This could be a simple programming issue, a two-way dispute, or perhaps a complete misunderstanding.
I would fully recommend that the WGA observe from the sideline on this one…
09/18/2004 at 3:39 am #1747664I don’t know what the story is regarding Buxley’s maps, but I often resort to them for finding caches in farther away sites. I hope whatever the situation is, that things can be resolved soon.
09/18/2004 at 4:14 am #1747665This actually happened quite some time ago. More than once Jeremy has walked all over the folks that gave so much in the beginning of the sport. Then again, business is business. It’s about money, self-preservation, and ego.
Thankfully, I have the option to take what I want from geocaching and leave the rest behind. Geocaching.com is not the basis of geocaching- it is just a database of caches. With the massive growth of the sport, many new hides are overlapping & becoming more mundane. As this continues, the other gps games & sites slowly become more interesting.
Luckly, I have yet to visit a few thousand places in WI that will someday make me go WOW…………
09/18/2004 at 4:18 am #1747666Could be a feud, but could be buxley was hitting server too much? Remember when Brew’s site got blocked????
Don’t break your streak Jeff! LOL

I recall some very early posts on this issue on gc.com. As I recall, (1)the server demand to support Buxley was putting a financial drain on groundspeak. Bux & gc.com couldn’t come to terms. (2)Groundspeak has propritory rights to the data they have been accumulating. Free access to any and all data would be an invitation to piracy and a huge loss of investment.
I don’t know this information to be fact. It’s just my understanding of this rather old issue.
tb09/18/2004 at 12:12 pm #1747668In my effort to be more politically correct (tongue in cheek) I have inserted the word silly in place of anal.
I shall save anal for some others I consider much more deserving of it (does that break my streak ???)09/18/2004 at 4:23 pm #1747669LOL – If you look at the majority of my posts and retorts, I think the term “anal” will fit my personality perfectly!
I would definitely use it here!
Keep smiling!
Jeff
09/18/2004 at 6:34 pm #1747670I recall another issue being outdate information. Buxleys contains many caches that are no longer active. If I remember right, Buxley had promised to make a better attempt to keep data current, and remove caches that are no longer active. He was then allowed access to the data again. (This was a few years ago)
A glance of the Buxley maps shows tons of caches that are not active. These should not be appearing on his maps. After a dispute with Groundspeak, Buxley added some narrative asking people to point out archived caches that need to be removed from his maps.

Please help me keep these maps up to date!
If you find a cache on these maps that has been moved or lost, please drop me a line with the cache name and URL. Thanks! -Buxley
I’m not sure what the current issues are. I do like the Buxleys maps and the ability to “mouse over” a cache and have the cache name displayed. It make it quick to locate a cache in any particular area.
Hopefully they will get their “problems” resolved.

09/19/2004 at 10:15 pm #1747671Ive been away for awhile.Does this have anything to do with there not being any new caches listed on the map in blue??
09/20/2004 at 11:46 pm #1747672Uh oh… sounds like we have a few Oliver Stone’s/Michael Moore’s out there…!
LOL
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think geocaching.com is raking in the profits. Let’s see… no advertising, few merchandise items, obnoxious server fees, tons of site traffic and it’s offered for free.
If their servers are being clogged by Buxley’s pinging then they should have every right to cut him off…
For all the fun people get out of this hobby, kick in the $20 for the fee! The mapping software on geocaching.com is slick and easy to use. Buxley’s map can’t zoom in very far and doesn’t have nearly the amount of detail that the gc.com maps do. Plus, Buxley has too many expired and archived caches…
Come on folks… We get upset when GC.COM does something we don’t like. At the same time we get upset at people like SwissPerpetual who try to start up something new! Seems kind of hypocritical?
09/21/2004 at 2:16 am #1747673GSAK can export a PQ into pretty much any mapping software commonly used by geocachers.
I use Garmin Roads & Recreation, Microsoft Streets & Trips, Mapsend Streets & Destinations (Magellan), & USA Photomaps.
Any of these loaded up with a fresh PQ can show me everything I could ever want.

I agree with you. I wonder where exactly their $$ comes from. The only part of what you say that I don’t agree with is I find Buxley’s maps easier to use than the gc.com maps. (Maybe since I’m not trying to find caches in really cache dense areas?) But, I really haven’t used either of maps for quite awhile – I now just put in a search for my zipcode and then find a cache I’m interested in from there. If I want to plan a trip of caches, I click on “find nearest caches” from the cache that interested me. Then I use Mapquest to figure out where I have to go.
I liked perusing Buxley’s to find caches all around the world. Like in Iraq. Or Greenland. Or Antarctica. It’s fascinating! I’m sure I could do the same on gc.com, but I just never figured it out yet….
