Several times recently, I have found caches that were wet for months on end, on private property, full of (real) bugs, or worse, and previous finders mentioned these problems in their logs again and again.
Community cache maintenance and/or the idea of saving a cache through adoption can be well worthwhile.
On the other hand, if a cache is indeed abandoned, in poor condition, and does not maintain some aspect of “awesome”- please realize that not all caches are really worth saving. There is nothing wrong with recommending a cache for archiving.
An archived cache provides a new oppportunity. Someone else can then use the area to make a unique hide of their own.
Having a new cache & cache page also provides a new opportunity for someone who has hunted the old cache. All too often, people are logging caches as “great” when they are actually in need of some maintenance. Cache owners and other hunters need detailed and honest logs in order to know what to expect and to help in fixing any issues that may arise.
If you ignore the problem, you become part of it!
There’s nothing like opening the lid on a great cache. Let’s make them all as great as possible.

Oh, and Happy 4th of July too!!
07/10/2004 at 11:31 am #1747228Well said cathunter. Trudy & I have always placed a high value on our responsibility for maintaining our caches. We have visited each of our caches regularly (every 6-8 weeks) to insure that the quality of our caches was as good for late comers as it was for those doing the FTF dance. This has put a limit on our placing activity that we gladly accept.
And it is for the reasons that cathunter and we have expressed, that we have archived six of our caches today. Some are getting a bit tired, and some mundane. We owe our fellow cachers some fresh ideas, fresh challenges and fresh locations. We also need to share the areas we have enjoyed with others, to give them the opportunity to express their talents on the turf we have dominated for the past year plus.
We want to thank those who have shared their experiences at those caches with us and promise to bring back more, hopefully even better caches in the coming few months.
Happy caching folks.
