This year we went to McDonalds drawn by the free smoothie coupon and Walgreens by the free water coupon. Both locations we spent nearly $30 above and beyond the freebie. (FYI – Walgreens was sold out of Bug spray!!)

I guess I timed this right as they were just completing the filling of an end-cap when I came in and bought my two cans of protection…

This was our first year in attendance, and we only had positive experiences.

Example: The Canoe caches topped our list as a perfect introduction to our first caching experience at this event, and our route to get there shows how well the event was run.

We tentatively planned a caching route, which did not include any water caches. But, after registering and then getting halfway through the parking lot to get to the geomobile, we decided to try the River Caches instead, and to do them first. We knew there was a phone number to call to make a reservation, but we could not find it in the handout….however we did find, and use, the hot-line number. We got a quick & friendly “Hello!”, and soon had the number we were seeking. We called to confirm there was an available canoe, drove out to the parking coords, gave our donation, hopped in, and blissfully paddled off down the Milwaukee River to grab six sweet caches. No lines to the caches, just ripples on the water and belted kingfishers in the air!

(And super kudos to the energetic, friendly and helpful kids that were handling the canoes!)

Great event! Please keep/add to the water feature next year!

Yeah, we brought that up to the Chamber, they were in charge of the bags. Drop them an e-mail so they know to do this more next year. I thought there was a lot of stuff in the bags this year though, but I agree, more coupons are always great. 😉

I had a blast at the event, it was my first mega and everything seemed to run smooth. The only feedback that I have that hasnt been mentioned multiple times already is, next year it would be wonderful to have actual food at the park. The snacks and supernachos were nice, but hotdogs, hamburgers or something like that with more substance would have been wonderful.

I really think the event was run well, but there is one thing I would like to see changed. Many of the caches are listed as placed by “WBA Chamber”. Now, we all know that no one in the chamber is actually placing or maintaining the caches, so either placing them with the actual placer’s account or adding an “assisted by” to the placed by text would be appreciated. By the way, I’m NOT trying to imply that we have a lot of maintenance issues with the caches placed for the event. I would say that those caches are maintained better than average. I just like to know who is hiding the caches I find.

This was our first even and we didn’t know what to expect. When we for there on Friday there weren’t that many people there but the one’s who were, were very nice and great to chat with. I had the intention of going to this even to get numbers but it didn’t work that way I spent most of the time helping out people who ither didn’t know how to cache or didn’t know anything about there Oregon. Im glad I didn’t go for number cause I wouldnt have meet the people I didn’t and made some great new friends. I also think there could have been some more choices of food but then again we wouldn’t have experiacned the awsome resurants we did without asking Kmhiker. There could have been a few more vendors. But all in all it was a great event and we look forward to coming for years to come.. thanks WGA and WBCC

Me too. Most of us agree put the “assisted by” on our hidden caches, including myself, LDove, kmhiker, MikMac4, and Mr Greenthumb. So, by process of elimination, if it didn’t include a name, Earth Angel was the wonderful hider.

However, most cached using the event booklet and never looked at some of the great cache pages that were created until they logged them. I had several e-mails after the event saying thanks, I didn’t know you hid that one when we found it. I think that is what d
Dave is looking for, something in the booklet. I’m not sure I would have liked that though. I may have received retaliation from everyone who got wet in the “Frog Pond”.

I will have to admit, most of the caches I did find over the three days out were marked as found using my Blackberry and GeocacheNavigator so most of my logs were done through my field notes. I did browse a few of the cache pages while logging on-line but now I think that I will take a little time and go view the pages as many have write-ups that may explain the cache titles better than my imagination.

Luckily, Seth took one for the team at Frog Pond, so no retaliation from me! 😀

Just a heads up, the cache “You’re so vain” .. someone might want to go check the sprinkler head located near GZ .. it was torn apart on Sunday afternoon when we went to find it. I put it back together as best I could. Cute cache

I heard multiple people say that the older caches around were all junk and needed maintenance. I was unable to get cache names from the conversations but the comments were soaked, moldy, empty and “trash”.

Not trashed – but trash, like the whole thing was more like random litter than a cache container.

That is a pretty strong statement in my opinion.

While the main attraction will be the new ones that come out, and it would be nice if everyone pitched in, the reality is they won’t. Yes it would be a significant task but I think it would be a good PR move to at least visit the old CB once in the month or so prior and clean them up.

          That IS a strong statement.

It’s funny how I’ve heard multiple people say OTHER teams say this, but nobody is willing to say it themselves or give specific examples? I’m sure there are a few caches like that out there, but I’m certain it wasn’t the majority.

As a cache owner, the only way I know something is wrong is if somebody tells me. I tried to visit as many of my caches as I could in the week leading up to the Ba$h to make sure they were in good shape, but I didn’t visit if people have been finding them all summer with no notes about any maintenance needing to be performed.

I’m sorry if other cache owners aren’t being diligent about maintaining caches. I would recommending sending that specific cache owner a note.

I too wonder which caches. While we only went after 20 of the event caches, we found 4 times that many of the older caches. I have to look back at our notes, but I think we found only one where the log was damp, otherwise the caches were in great condition considering how long some of these have been out doors.

LOL – – but the girl that Walgreens told me where to find bug spray at WalMart. After checking out at Walgreens, we headed over there and bought another $25.00 worth of bug spray, bug wipes and duct tape.

Our first time to the Bash and had a great time:

          Positive:
Kids enjoyed the pool while we waited around for the drawing.
          Helpful people
Did use the discount coupons and still have a couple left if we get back that way yet this year

          Negatives:
Trackable area wasn’t really well marked/closed early (we came back from caching hoping to trade and it was all closed up)
Some caches we did needed help, we avoided all the new ones for the most part and went out after a challenge we were working on for that day and hit a few caches along the way that needed help. Unfortuneatly we had cleaned our bag out for the bike ride we did the next day and had no extra logs or baggies along.
The WhereIgo worked up on my Blackberry up until we tried to use a tool and then no luck. Our first time doing a WhereIgo so we didn’t know if it was us or not. Did find someone to finish it with though.

All in all not a bad experience, we had a blast and the kids really liked the pool. Great way to highlight the city and I’m sure I’ll think of more later to add.

Ah, yes. We had the trackables sitting out at a marked table until we overheard a newbie grab a couple and say, “Hey cool! Free trackables!”

After THAT, we had to have somebody keep it with them at all times, and we didn’t always have enough volunteers for that job.

So what were your favorite hides so we know what you like for next year? 😀
