Hello Gang.
Below is the list of people that I have penciled in to help with the cache hiding on Sunday May 6th:
- Bec
- Grousetales
- Fu
- k0rpl
- zuma
- Sloughfoot
- Coastie
- RSPlash40
- mathman
- Jeremy
- Stumbleweeder
- seldom|seen
If you signed up, but are not on the list, please let me know. The names appeared on several threads and I’m trying to condense them here.
We need to print off enough materials for the cache hiders, so we need to have an accurate head count.
Meeting time: 9:00 AM
Plan on a full day of cache hiding fun, and camaraderieMeeting location:
Primary – Allen Lake shelter.
N44 19.529
W89 13.040.
Park in the parking lot, then walk up a short trail to an open sided shelter. Toilets are nearby, as well as a grill in case we want to grill out :). This location is somewhat centrally located, and is on high ground, which will aid in FRS communications.Second choice – If Allen Lake is already in use, we will use the Hartman Lake Shelter.
N44 19.427
W89 12.557
This is the same location as the WGA event. It’s a closed shelter, which may be locked up. There is a grill and is situated in a grove of pine trees. Toilets are also located here.Communications: – FRS channel 7. Please bring your FRS radios if you have them. They are a great way to keep in touch! We can also exchange cell phone numbers when we arrive, but I don’t know how good the Cell coverage is in the park.
What to bring:
- Cache containers. If you have a creative cache container, PLEASE bring it and use it. We’ll provide the stampers. The caches do not necessarily need to be hidden this day, but their location and info will be recorded.
- GPS (duh!)
- FRS Radios
- Bug spray. Shouldn’t be any skeeters, but there’s always a chance for ticks. GrouseTales STRONGLY recommends a product called “Permanone” made by “Repel”, which is available at Walmart, and other sporting goods stores. It is sprayed on your clothing before you wear them. It’s lasts for 2 weeks and is AWESOME! (do not apply to skin or you will fall to the ground and start buzzing in circles)
- Water
- Snacks, food to grill of you are so inclined. I’ll bring some charcoal for the grill.
- Rain gear. Cache hiding day is rain or shine. I hate using the “R” word, but you never know what will happen.
- Creative cache ideas !!!
Night Caches:
As was announced elsewhere, we will be having a contest for favorite night cache. In the past, we’ve selected the locations on cache hiding day, and hid the night caches Saturday after the main event. This is a great chance to show off a creative night cache idea.We really would like to encourage some new creative night caches. Hopefully our day cache hiders will also be able to contribute night caches. New this year, we will allow other geocachers to hide a night cache they day of the main event. If someone isn’t able to attend the session on May 6th, they can select a night cache location on May 19th, or any time before. We will then enter the coordinates into the GPX upload for the night caches.
Night caches all need to be within walking distance of the group camp. If hiding a night cache, plan on parking at group sites 3/4 and hiding the night cache within walking distance.
Attached are some maps and handouts for your printing enjoyment.
05/02/2007 at 4:51 pm #1872998Attached is a .gpx file showing the two shelters, and 3 routes. I’ve created routes that delineate the boundaries of the two SNA’s in the park. If you activate a particular route on your gps, it should then fill in the border of the SNA. This will help you stay clear of the SNA’s
Also added parking areas and the group sites.
05/04/2007 at 6:23 pm #1872999What are the hide sheets going to look like? Standard gc.com print outs? Spreadsheet with just coords/terr/diff?
thanks
Mike
05/04/2007 at 6:45 pm #1873000It is a formatted spreadsheet made into a booklet (8.5×11 sheets folded). Each booklet page (8.5×5.5) will contain info on 5 caches with a box to stamp the stamper from the cache. Here is one cache from the last picnic:
38. (VISTA) Vista View
by Greyhounder
N42 49.579 W88 35.542
Nordic Trail
D/T: (1.0/1.5)
Container: Camo Small Jar
It gives the name in the GPX along with full name, hider, coords, which park trail it is on, D/T and container description. Hints are compiled on a separate page. All the cache pages are combined in a booklet with general information about park rules, event schedule, park map with caches and parking marked, and hints.

Comments05/07/2007 at 1:59 pm #1873002My apologies to everyone for not making it as I had promised, I did not see much of anything saturday but the back of my eyelids thanks to picking up the flu. Sunday I was awake but in no shape to drive. Doing much better today.
k0rpl reported that the day went well and a good number of hides were placed which is good to hear that enough hands were available to take care of it. Maybe next year!

05/07/2007 at 3:01 pm #1873003I’d like to thank all of the volunteers that helped hide caches on Sunday. We had a good turnout, and the weather wonderful.
Many of these people drove hundreds of miles to help out. At today’s gas prices, that means they probably donated hundreds of gas dollars 🙂
Thanks for all your help !!
Anyone get any ticks???I sprayed down with Permanone and didn’t see any ticks. I did have a skeeter land on me while out hiding a cache.

I had no ticks at all either. This was my first visit to Hartmann, and it is a beautiful park. I am glad we had a great turnout for the hide, and I think there are going to be a good variety in the type of hides.

I had three wood ticks. Two I detected while I was hiking, the other one rode back to Milwaukee with me (it was inside my sweatshirt that I took off before I left the park).
I also had a couple skeeters bother me, but I’m guessing they will be a lot worse if the weather is warm the next two weeks…
05/09/2007 at 2:09 pm #1873006Well i guess i was the unluckly one, i found one on me, i tried to get him off, but i started to panic as he was a tiny one and did not give up easliy, i ended up going to the ER, cuz since he was soo small and wouldn’t let go, i thought it was a deer tick, it took (including the time i tried to get him off 1 1/2 hours for him to let go… luckly it was just a small wood tick, and no infection.. thank god.. i feel silly after the fact but now i know that i have to have the spray and i learned my lesson..
So everyone who is going to the camp-out bring spray, tuck your pants into your socks, and check yourself all over the place for ticks.. and wash your clothes when you get home immediatly!!!05/22/2007 at 3:09 pm #1873007I wanted to again thank the team that helped hide temp caches and night caches. We had some really cool and creative caches this weekend. Many people went the extra mile when hiding temps. The hides were spread out in every corner of the park, which helped reduce crowding.
Thanks again for a job well done.
Also, I want to thank those who helped gather the temp caches on Sunday. They were all retrieved in a timely manner. Thanks!
